Sources: Byrd, agent trying to orchestrate trade - Sports - The Buffalo News

Reasons why we won't trade for him:

1) Precedent is against it
2) his salary/franchise tag
3) he's currently injured
4) he wants a new contract
5) even though it's the perennially basement-dwelling Bills, they are a divisional opponent, and would likely ask for a premium

Reasons why we should trade for him:

1) ******* Steve Gregory
2) we can afford it

I'd go after him in a heartbeat, with the way the NFL is going and the size of the Pats front 7 they could afford to have 2 lighter FS types at the back to solidify pass coverage without it hurting the run defense too much.

But the Bills aren't going to trade him to New England for anything resembling reasonable. A disgruntled player who's injured and on a contract year should fetch no higher than a 3rd rounder + conditional pick but the Bills will want more.

If he's injured he'd fit in with most recent pats trades/free agents/draftees

I'd give up a 3rd that could become a 2nd based on playing time. Doubt Bills would trade him within division. Given our recent track record in the 2nd/3rd rounds, our track record drafting DBs and Byrd's relative youth and high upside, it's a COMPLETE no-brainer. But I doubt we'll do it.

That sounds reasonable patsox23. Byrd would be an immediate upgrade in a position of need (especially given the Patriots words that they teach their Safeties FS/SS responsibilities).

Unless there is a better draft prospect or FA in 2014, this is something that has piqued my interest.

Another thing with Byrd is the contract he wants.

Talib & McCourty both need paying too and looking at Over The Cap with carry over the Pats will have $19m to spend, free agents of note on the team though:

Talib
Edelman
Spikes
Ninkovich
Wendell

Blount will also be a free agent.

The following players would net the team a nice saving if cut:
Stephen Gostkowski $2.5m
Dan Connolly $2.5m
Gregory $1.8m

So with all that in mind, Byrd doesn't add up to good value and we know that is what BB will look at first, especially when there's draft picks and big money on the line.

The Bills are more likely to cut Byrd so that the Chiefs pick him up off of waivers as the #1 position on the waiver wire process than trade him to the Pats.

Byrd isn't going anywhere anyway. At this point, the Bills are going to get pennies on the dollar for him. He is on the franchise tag which means someone would have to absorb his cap hit and have no guarantees that they will be able to keep him after this season. He cannot renegotiate his deal until after the season. So that means a team may be trading for a very expensive rent a player (although a very talented rent a player).

Most likely the Bills will keep him and franchise him next offseason and trade him.

Terrific player, but plantar fasciitis is no minor condition. As indicated in the article, it can be managed but not everyone recovers from it. Can you imagine the level of whining around here if NE traded for him and then he missed time due to this pre-existing condition?

Players who would be unrestricted FAs if released do not go through waivers until after the trade deadline.

I'd prefer that he play on his fascist foot on Sunday, get burned repeatedly, stay with Buffalo, and get burned repeatedly again on December 29, 2013 in Foxboro.

If they stay healthy and play to potential:
Talib gets paid
Edelman is basically free
Spikes walks
Ninkovich won't get anything resembling top dollar
Wendell will get an average deal

I don't see too much of an issue with these guys. You left out McCourty though, McCourty and Talib are the 2 must-signs for next year.

Why couldn't Byrd be on any NFC team? No way the Bills would trade him to us.

I would trade a 2nd-3rd for Byrd, even if it was just for one season, thats how much it would help us win #4.

Picture two top 5 FSs on our back end, with Talib/Dennard/Arrington at CB, as well as our talented front 7, what a friggin defense.

I agree on Talib, Edelman, Spikes and Wendell. I think another team will certainly pay well for Ninko and if that happens, will the Patriots match or at least get in the ballpark? Scary because at the moment they don't really have anyone to jump in and take over his role. Perhaps through the draft or FA they can fill it but I'm not looking that far ahead yet.

McCourty isn't going to be a FA (5 year contract signed in 2010) but signing him early ala Gronk would be the way to go.

Ninkovich might get stupid money from some team like Kruger did with the Browns, Ninkovich is a better player than Kruger.

If/when Hernandez is convicted is there a chance the NFL don't count his cap hits for the Pats giving them even more cap space though? If that happens then it gives them a lot of room to play around with.

Wasn't saying I don't think Nink will get paid, I just don't think he'll get paid top dollar. He doesn't put up the sack numbers, he's affordable for us, assuming he wants to play here.

Ahh, right. I wasn't sure what kind of deal we gave McCourty. Either way, I'd rather pay him sooner than later, he's a requirement for our defense and I don't want to even give him a chance to test the market. I'd rather him get paid before solidifying himself as a top safety, where he'll command more.

Not automatically, no.

He has $3M in yet-to-be-paid signing bonus that the Pats will force him to fight them for, plus they have the right to go after his signing bonus.

Tavon Wilson sucks and Steve Gregory is ideally a back-up. We have the money for it. I would all for it.

This isn't entirely true, PF can be very minor and go away quickly or it can linger forever. Marques Colston has it and hasn't been practicing for like a year but gets a shot and is good to go on game day. Granted, a safety spends a lot more time on his heels than a WR does so that may not be possible for a guy like Byrd.

FWIW there's a lot of chatter on the Bills board that the medical staff never actually diagnosed him with it and that it's really just a precept to sit out and force a trade. Don't know how true that is or if we'd want someone who did that but we've traded for guys like Moss and Talib in the past.

What I like most about the idea of this is that it almost solves our entire backfield in one fell swoop. We instantly become not only an elite safety unit, but an injury to a CB and McCourty can jump out there and we're still solid at safety. It basically adds depth at both positions. I think that should be considered when thinking about the 'value' here.

That said, I'm not holding my breath. Faced with the prospect of a 3rd round pick (conditional second) and not letting the inmates run the asylum while strengthening a 'rival' (lol), I see the Bills opting for the latter.

Correct me, if i´m wrong.

Byrd is on franchise tag. So we have to spend an 1rd pick, right?
Thanks, but no way.

Would love it if the Byrd would fly to Foxboro, but I'm sure that ain't happenin'...
