BSM: Was Joey Porter Baited By the Boston Media?

Re: BSM:Was Joey Porter Baited By the Boston Media?

Baited? Honestly, if I were part of the Boston media, I would call that moron out on his BS, especially pertaining to spygate. I don't know why it doesn't happen more often in sports writing. Are reporters actually afraid of players?

If Porter started that spygate crap and I was a beat writer, I think my next question would be something loosely to the effect of "are you afraid of coming off as a pathetic sore loser, as well as an inarticulate, unintelligent dumbass with the maturity of a 3rd grader?" I mean, its a concall, what's he going to do about it?

Re: BSM:Was Joey Porter Baited By the Boston Media?

So what if he was? The guy is a professional athlete that has been interviewed by the media many times only to expose himself to the world as an idiot. The media certainly doesn't need to be defended, but c'mon, what else would anyone expect. He has every right to answer the questions he's asked in a professional manner or he can shoot his mouth off which he seems accustomed to doing by choice.

Was Porter baited by Karen G.?
Yes, very much so.

Is this the first time Porter or any other athlete or coach has been asked leading questions?
No, nor will it be the last.

All Porter has to do is follow other athlete's lead and give a rehearsed answer that doesn't even address the question, like "well we got them pretty good the first time we met, but they got us the last time, so we're looking forward to a tough game ...", etc. - or he could always use the old reliable "no comment" or "next question".

That being said, Guregian is not blameless either. Obviously she took the low road, probably under direction of her editor, to create a story. They're a business, that's their business model, I'll leave it at that.

The problem is that after she asks those questions, the other media members are in a predicament. They probably weren't planning on asking these type of questions, but now that they're out there, what do they write for their columns? If they only write about the rest of the interview's questions and answers, will anybody read their article? If they don't write about Porter's answers to Guregian's questions, will their website/paper/radio station appear to be scooped by missing the 'big story' that all their competitors are running? Do they call Karen G out in a clumn like Bruce Allen did, or would that violate one of the unwritten rules of working in the media?

To me the best way another site or paper could handle it would be to write about what was said in the rest of the conference call, focusing on the game, and at the end of the article talk just a little bit about this portion of the interview. Point out that Porter tried to deflect some very leading questions by 'another reporter', and give one or two of his quotes. In other words don't make this the story. Don't reward Guregian for her questions, don't make Porter's spygate comments the big story. But you can still draw readers in with a headline such as "Porter talks about the Pats" or something like that. Another way to deal with it would be to have a second, separate column abut this portion of the interview - along with comments such as Allen made in the link above.

Easy for you to say.. but everyone is a human being, and all it takes is the wrong question at the wrong time for someone to let down their guard.

Wait.... so you're saying that Karen G. is a master at this?

Patriots players are baited all the time from other media markets when they do these conference calls. They know how to keep their mouths shut.

Porter runs off at the mouth whenever he is given a chance. The Boston media would be stupid not to bait him into giving them sound bites. The fact he doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut makes hima target.

I blame Tony Sporano more than the Boston media. If he was concerned about what Porter would say, don't make him available to the Boston media. If they let Joey talk, then anything is fair game.

Absolutely. All the more reason why it should be easy for him, but he continues to trash-talk and should expect to be questioned in a similar manner.

for fairness sake here is the restof the questiong

Joey, what's the difference going to be facing Tom Brady this year as opposed to Matt Cassel?

JP: Well, you have Tom Brady in the game who is their natural starter, who is their leader of the team. And it's Tom Brady [against] Matt Cassel - it's a big difference. Tom Brady, this is the fourth time, he is well-proven and then I went up against Matt Cassel his first time when he was just trying to figure out the game. They are at full power. They have all the guns and all the weapons. We got all the guns and weapons here, too, and that makes for a good fight.

Q: I don't know if you've been able to watch film yet. But having watched, I'm assuming you've watched Tom Brady. Do you notice any differences in him coming back off a year off with the knee problem?

JP: No, he still throws the ball. He's still accurate. He'll still pick you apart if you leave him time. I mean, looks like the same Tom Brady to me.

Q: Joey, how important to their offense is Wes Welker and what he does with the yards after the catch. How big of part of what they do is that?

JP: He's just a guy that can keep moving the chains. He'll catch a deep ball here and there, but that's not what they use him for. They use him for all the little screens and the crossing routes, just to get him involved in the game and lolly gag you to sleep, worrying you about where Wes [Welker] is at. And then they try you deep with Randy [Moss]. Then when you're worried about Wes and Randy, they'll pound the ball. Then after all of that, they'll throw some sinking routes to [Benjamin] Watson. I mean, they've got all the weapons, let's be honest. They've got the guys on their offense that can move the ball. Our job is to [disrupt] all this [and] don't let them feel comfortable like they feel. We don't want them to feel like they're at 7-on-7 in practice playing pitch and catch. We're supposed to make it hard for everybody to eat that day. And that's what my intention is. My intention is not to let Tom Brady have a nice day just sitting back there in the pocket, patting the ball, waiting for Wes to get open, and Randy to get open and those guys, we want to have somebody in his face, hitting him, getting him on the ground as many times as possible.

Q: What can you guys take from the game last year in Miami where they threw a lot of yards at you and Moss had the big game?

JP: Obviously, we played them different from the first time we did. They came and played us different. They came out and spread us out and that's not the type they went the first time. They ran away from the pound game. We kind of pounded them up the first time, so we kind of expected the same type of game and they switched up and went to the pass formation. And they just pretty much ... The game got away from us when they did that. That was then. This is a whole new year, whole new characters. They've got their main guy and we've got some different guys in different situations over here, but make no mistake we're ready for whatever they come with.

Q: Joey, one more thing kind of comparing that to then. Last year, you were 2-4. Obviously, at that point something happened because you guys turned around and won 11 games. Do you see similarities, even within the last couple weeks, beating the Jets and everything else, that maybe this team's starting to turn the corner the way that one did.

JP: Actually, we could have turned the corner a couple of weeks ago, but we keep doing little things not to finish the game. And that's what we did [against the Jets]. We're not exactly where we want to be, but we're heading in the right direction, I can say that. We're heading in the right direction, and if we play like we did last week and keep building on that we'll be OK.
Dolphins: Joey Porter Conference Call

Except for Porter, the Dolphins are not all that detestable. They seem to reflect a Bill Parcells-type roster already, with an attitude of lining up, being physical, and smashing you.

Sure the wildcat is viewed by many as a trick and a gimmick, but from another point of view it is stuff-in-down-their-throats football. I kind of respect that, so it helps to focus on that idiot to get up a good degree of loathing.

I think you have a bright future in journalism ahead of you.

ok? and he took the bait like the idiot he is.

Wait.... so you're saying that Karen G. is a master at this?

Yes, she appears to be a master baiter.......

Probably took her cue from Felger.

An awesome little nugget from Bruschi in today's ESPN chat:

Tedy Bruschi
(1:28 PM)
