Bruschi on tap: post-game analysis

Mankins ain't backing down,he wants his money and won't return for another month,I will be surprised if he does.

His Chung analasys sounds familiar from the game thoughts post last night.

Exactly. And the ball that Chung returned was a step in the right direction for him. Marshall looked like he was going to hit him with a jerk route, but stopped instead. Chung bit hard on that against Bess and this time read it right and stayed in position to defend it, which actually led to the pick. Otherwise Chung bites and is chasing Marshall and that ball falls incomplete.

Some folks on here would benefit from watching shows like Playbook and picking up Pat Kirwan's book. It will really help them understand what they are actually watching, especially for those folks that have never played organized football at the high school level or above.

4. Challenges ahead for the defense. One topic that came up during the ESPN telecast was the play of some former Patriots defenders, and it reminded me of something that will provide the answer as to how this defense is coming along. The more the names Bruschi, Mike Vrabel, Richard Seymour and Rodney Harrison are mentioned, the more it will highlight how this defense is still struggling. Some analysts are still living in the past and remembering the play of past championship Patriots defenders, but this is a time for new names to rise up, like Chung, Rob Ninkovich, Jerod Mayo and others. Old names must fade into the past and new championship players must emerge. I am excited to see how these new Patriot defenders play against elite quarterbacks.

Great stuff from Bru, like always!

Only had to read the first line to agree...

When you look at the main reason why the Patriots won the game, it's special teams.

Pat Chung and Brandon Tate broke the Dolphins back with their moments of inspiration and good displays from the likes of Ninkovich helped seal the deal.

damn mgcolby, maybe i will pick up that book, if it gives me insight like that

Its not just the book, but the book is very good. I coach little league football (well not his year) so I read a lot of strategy books. And watch a lot of football.

Also the Pats have been getting killed on those all season, Keller's (I believe) TD pass in the back of the end zone was a jerk route that kicked McCourtey's ass.

But I was probably more aware of that play last night on Chung, because I used the Bess TD as a teaching aid to my son right after it happened. You can't get sat down like that by a receiver without staying on his outside shoulder or it will be a big gain. So when I saw Marshall start that route and Chung sat on the jerk route to his outside my first words to my son were see that is how you play it. Then I explained to him that it wasn't a "gift", he earned that INT because he learned from his mistake earlier in the game.

Patspsycho's threads are very informative to. Haven't seen the thread for this week yet (hint, hint).

I usually don't say a lot because in the case of many posters it is easy to see that they simply have no idea what they are watching. They just see someone trailing a receiver and think he got burned, when he was most likely in zone and either the safety went to the wrong receiver or was late in his read (a generic example, I know).

A good example would be last night, when people were criticizing Mayo for "dancing" with the ball carrier, but what they failed to realize is that he was the last point of defense, if he attacks aggressively and misses the tackle the guy is off to the races. Instead he broke down and mirrored him until help arrived and the ball carrier didn't gain another yard. He did his job.

I could go on, but it typically falls on deaf ears around here. :bricks:

my ears are working fine:idontgetit:

So, if/when Mankins comes back for week ten or whatever -- what are the Patriots' obligations for letting him come back? Do they have to let him on the 53?

I love this, for all the people who will dismiss all the "fluke" plays:

. I remember beating the Indianapolis Colts when they were still in the AFC East in 2001 and David Patten caught a touchdown pass, ran for a touchdown, and threw for a touchdown. We knew stuff like that rarely happens but the bottom line is that we won the game and it didn't matter how it got done.

> A good example would be last night, when people were criticizing Mayo for "dancing" with the ball carrier

Yeah, I didn't understand the criticism. Mayo gave the guy no way to escape: either get tackled or go out of bounds.

Yeah I got the hint, but a lot of people jumping off the virtual ledge right now. Going to wait until that blows over.

sorry for being a lazy bum and not bothering to look it up, but can you provide the name of that book please? thanks.

and please don't stop writing about your analysis. My hearing is bad but eyesight is fine . All football thoughts that analyze the game - especially by those who have played or coached - help ignorant fans like me.

Thanks!

Pretty sure the Pat Kirwan book mgcolby is referring to Take Your Eye Off The Ball: How To Watch Football By Knowing Where To Look.

Thanks. I bought it thinking that it would be some basic watch the game from the inside out kind of deal, especially given the name. But I was pleasently surprised at how informitive it was especially for it being so short. The good news is that it isn't dry, he drops little nuggets of inside knowledge from his coaching/front office days.

Got it at Borders for 17 bucks.

Thanks! Never too late to learn and I will pick it up tonight.

Humble request to members having experience in playing/coaching to continue posting their insights into the fine aspects of the game. Thank you!
