Browns coaches try to get front office shakeup

You know, I kind of disagree. I think a sign of a healthy franchise is the ability to take big swings like the Osweiler deal but to be able to move on when it's obvious on the field there's a better solution without recriminations. Seattle did it with Flynn/Wilson. We did it with Brady/Bledsoe. Ozzie Newsome acquired Kyle Boller with the picks that would become Wilfork and
Bethel Johnson, a firing offense if anything was. If Tom Savage becomes a good QB, that should be a win for everyone involved.

Well, it's up to you. I agree that even a very good organization can make huge mistakes (Adalius Thomas, anyone?) But I choose the Osweiler example because it's making a huge bet on a player who is already in the league -- quite different from a draft swing-and-miss like Kyle Boller. And I stand by the point that there shouldn't be divided responsibility on such big things.

I'm not sure if the Browns coaches are thinking this one through. If the current GM is replaced, a new GM will have his own ideas about the makeup of the team, including the coaching staff.

I admire what the Texans did: making a bold move and put a bet on a young QB who showed potential in limited time, creative to steal him away from Denver. Bold move, didn't work out, but not every move is going to.

They also put a bet in on Tom Savage who comes into a high upside situation without the same pressure than if he'd been given the job outright.

Osweiler still has some residual trade value, and their cap situation isn't as bad as the Jets, carrying Regis et al.

When you don't already have a QB, and given how scarce they are these days, if your FO isn't being aggressive to find one you're just giving up.

So every other team in the NFL is a bunch of morons and we are the bestest ever?

If we are talking about one man doing duty as HC and GM, then yes. No one else can do this.

So far they get an incomplete.
Accepting their fate this year to build for the future was smart. But they have to do the right thing with the rebuild otherwise they are in the same place they have always been.

I think they are taking an unemotional, value matters approach and intend to build a deep roster rather than chasing stars and that will result in success

Jamie Collins for a 3rd was a good start.

Giving Jamie Collins 5/$60m $30m guaranteed is rolling the dice big time.

That would be a bad move and make me feel less likely they are moving in the right direction

Hue Jackson took a temporary power void in Oakland and traded a first and second round draft pick for Carson Palmer. He's not the poster child for delayed gratification.

Also worth to mention that Pagano seemed to be getting more heat for his job than Grigson. Grigson is probably the worst in the league at his job. Can only blame Pagano so much (he's certainly not great though there is fair criticism), Grigson can't draft worth ****. Can't think of one good defensive player he's drafted.
That first rounder for Trent Richardson was a work of sweet talent evaluation.

I have never understood why, in the U.S., professional sports teams have a personnel guy (the GM) in authority over the coach. There's no rational justification. Baseball?

Exactly.
Whenever they try to do this in “european“ sports it fails. Two-headed leadership is a recipe for breakdown.
One of the key reasons for the unbelievable Pats run is one-headed leadership of BB.
The catch is in developing and trusting your assistant coaches.
Distributing the work is key part of any leadership.

The GM is spending the owners money running the business. The Coach is an Xs and Os guy who should work closely with the GM acquiring the best players for his system. There are so few people like Belichick that can be both GM and Coach successfully without running the franchise into the ground.

Take Parcells for example. Great Coach and GM, but he used to pass out big money contracts like candy to players that were loyal to him. He did that with the Pats and Jets. Also, at least in Krafts case, Parcells preferred to work independent of the owner.

Thomas was a beast his first year and a half. Almost played a big role in a championship. Feel like that signing got a lot more heat in hindsight.

07 and 08 before he broke his arm he was fine. Not sure he was worth the $25m guaranteed but whatever.

09 he was a dog
He was a SB MVP candidate Id argue...Shame nobody recovered that fumble.

He had a good game no question.

People forget he played a lot of ILB to start the year in 07. He did well

This play made it a good signing
