Brandon Spikes Video

Rex and Bud were employed by or in ownership at the time of their indiscreet behavior. Spikes was a college kid with no ties to the league or any team at the time. That someone else released a tape of the indiscretion once he was has nothing to do with him and his behavior as a member of the league. This isn't the Miss America Pagent...

I was responding to the bit about not being able to fine players for legal activities. If you are an NFL player under contract and commit some offense, it certainly is possible according to the vague language of the PCP. In Spikes' case, and I've already said this at least twice, I don't see anything happening other than a lecture. This is for a couple of reasons. 1) He was (likely) in college at the time, and 2) Goodell tends to forgive relatively harmless first offenders (the Pats notwithstanding). But the broader point is that if Spikes did this a second time or after a warning and while under contract to an NFL team I would not be surprised at all to see Goodell apply the PCP and institute a penalty. It's well within his power. The distinction between legal and illegal activities doesn't really apply to the PCP based on the way it's currently written. Unlawful activities are a problem, as are activities that are counter to the best interests of the league. It's an insanely broad provision.

On a personal level, I could care less about any of those guys or what they have done but that's besides the point.

With the exception of Cromarite, you have cited singular instances of poor conduct that the league has taken action against. Let me restate my position....

I stated in my post that a player who undertakes a career in porn (as in does a bunch of films a year) will not be employable in the NFL. Porn, right or wrong is still taboo (no pun intended) to millions of people and has proven to be interwoven into drugs and organized crime. Thats the perception people have. If you don't believe that, I don't know what else to tell you.

With the exception of Cro, all of the folks I listed engaged in criminal behavior. My point is owner and fans don't care all that much about players behavior off the field only what they can do on the field.

So while porn is considered taboo, it would be forgiven by the fans and thus the owner and coach if the player helped the team win.

Hypothetically: Spikes goes to the pro-bowl this year. After the pro-bowl he head to hollywood and stars in variety of the most disgusting hard core porn flicks imaginable. Is he going to get cut? I doubt it. If he did would another team sign him? Absolutely.

His stock rises and falls based on what he does on the field. Very few fans care what he does off the field, and if dozen STH canceled their ticket to protest the employment of a porn start, the team would have no trouble selling those tickets to others.

I know this kid from Michigan State who is getting a degree in lawn / turf management. He got a job working for the Lions, taking care of their fields and stuff. Anyways, around the locker room Ernie Sims' nickname was Cinnamon Roll. Why? Because his **** is so big he would roll it up like a cinnamon roll and show everyone.

Weird fact? Yes. Applicable to this thread? No

I think if Goodell was to expend the PCP so broadly he union would insist on the suasion of the PCP.

The language is already there. I'm not the first to comment on it, either. It's insanely broad.

Yes. The language exists that would give Goodell the power to permanently ban Spikes for the porn, Cromartie for being a bad father, Rex Ryan for swearing on hard knocks, Brady for having a child out of wedlock, or even Kendall Langford for setting a bad example regarding taking care of personal property. However, if he started invoking the PCP for such minor crap you can bet the union would take issue.

Reebok was about to strike some deal with him and now they have pulled away.
If Spike is going to be the real deal, it is good that his has happened to him at such a good age and can really cite the "learning experience" thing.
But he and his agent should stop that it was in College excuse. It will not make the story go away.
If Chatroulete was created in December 2009, when was he last in College?
Those filled up tattoos were done in May 2010. The video is mirrored so it is his right hand you are seeing.
story please go away, also glad it was not brought up right before our opening game. Will have been really distracting.

I tend to agree, though I'm not sure how much say the union has considering that they agreed to the policy. Off topic, but a shrewd and calculating negotiator might use something like this to assert an extension of his power during negotiations to create additional leverage. It's a bit over the top, but that's the same thinking that, in part, has lead to the "enhanced season" becoming an issue right about now.

I think Matt Walsh leaked the tape

WOW, just say the words "sex video" here and it appears as if it draws everyone in. Awesome.

I wonder if the words "Cello Concerto" would have the same effect?

You know your in this thread also right?

Being the policy is not in the CBA and the union agreed to external to the CBA with nothing in exchange, I would expect the union could simply say,"we rescind our agreement to the PCP, the commish may only punish within the guidelines of the CBA" And the policy is gone. Poof.

She intended to shoot the video. Obviously with the intent it would be viewed, probably by an audience of only 2 -- her and her boyfriend. She did not intend for it to be seen by her students.

He intended to be seen having sex by only two other people. He did not intend for it to be seen by an wider audience other than the other pair that he was watching as well.

Using chatroulette you can make that opinion??? I don't see how.

She used a camera and he used the internet ... I don't see a comparison there.

Lots of people film themselves doing it ... whatever ... all the power to them.

But using the internet to do it ... that's plain dumb and he's supposed to be a very intelligent man. so perhaps it wasn't dumb. There's a huge gray area here. An intelligent guy that does something many people would think twice about. perhaps he wanted people to see it. I don't think anyone can say he did or didn't with any conviction.

But he did do it and he's a high profile player on a very popular team that uses it's logo and organization to raise money for charities. The video is not going away anytime soon ... I don't see how you can keep him and maintain a high level of integrity for the organization. If he was a Raider they might be proud of him.

No thanks. Why would I? I didn't watch the Erin Andrews tape that got leaked, definitely not going to watch this one. I don't want to watch any tape that was recorded without the knowledge of the participants, for the explicit purpose of exploiting them. It's just none of my business, and the fact that some criminal decided to make it public doesn't make it my business.

i had one opinion when I first heard the story ... I said MEH.

Then I watched some of it and my opinion changed.

I'm just one person ... I bet if more people saw it they would at least reconsider how they feel. It's not what I expected ... I'll say that.

It was downright creepy - he looked wasted and he looked to be enjoying the experience like someone possessed. The sex looked from routine to dull ... like he was lacing up his shoes. The look on his face creeped me right out.

I cannot stress how different it is. She looked quite normal - more on the enjoyment level I would expect of such a thing. She looked to be turned on - he looks like he's having a possessed experience out of a weird movie.

If Mr. Kraft watches it ... he won't be pleased ... I am sure of that.
What he does about it ... who knows.

You see it as an offense. I don't. Nothing he did would qualify as such. Like I said, there are Senators who have admitted doing much worse, and kept their jobs.

This makes me think you're confused about what chatroulette is.

He dumbly thought that one other viewer was watching, not realizing it was being taped.

He wasn't filming porn.

This was a consensual act of voyeurism among adults.

Put it this way: what if, in his meeting with Goodell today, Spikes had said, I got married last week, and my wife and I enjoy voyeurism in our sex life.

What then?

By your analogy then, sending an email to one person, is the same thing as posting it on a blog. An email uses the Internet.

As for him being very intelligent. He is not a Rhode Scholar. His job does not involve designing safety parts for commercial airplanes. Or advance medicine. He is a football player. His job is to knock big people onto the ground. He might be smarter than the some other people whose job involves knocking big people onto the ground, but he is not a rocket scientist.

Nor is his job to raise money for charities. His job is to knock big people onto the ground. Preferable ones holding onto a football attempting to make a pass. If he does that I will be happy.

The New England Patriots is not the Peace Corp. This does nothing to harm the integrity of the team. A few years ago a different incident involving a video camera actually did caused serious harm to the integrity of the organization. Granted that incident was overblown, but it harmed the organization way more than some player getting a blow job on video could ever do.

Holy cow! Now I've heard it all!!!!!!

He should have put a wierd mask on like they did in "Eyes Wide Shut".

No, he can't but I do believe that if Spikes undertakes a career in porn (which by all accounts he won't) is now unemployable as not a single NFL owner would want to have him on their gameday roster. It's bad business.

With that said, porn is a billion dollar business and is now about as mainstream as a sit-com.

Pretty interesting dichotomy actually.

Not even Al Davis?
