The fact is, PSI never mattered to the NFL until January of 2015 and then it went right back to not mattering.
This a thousand times over. I know we've all been over all this already, but please consider:
- A month before the AFCCG, the Panthers were actually caught on television tampering with footballs during a cold weather game in Minnesota, warming up footballs with those big heaters to pump up the balls to Cam's liking. Caught ON TV. The NFL simply sent them a note saying, hey you can't do that.
- This year, the Steelers are caught by the Giants using under inflated footballs. The NFL simply dismisses the whole thing, saying the balls were handled properly (proper procedures were followed). Note, they never said anything about the PSI being under the legal limit.
In between those two events we have the Patriots. And with the Patriots came the biggest NFL scandal in league history - if you judge it by the penalty they suffered.
So to review:
- Before the 2015 AFCCG, PSI and tampering = NOTHING.
- The 2015 AFCCG involving the Patriots, PSI and tampering = BIGGEST SCANDAL IN LEAGUE HISTORY.
- After the 2015 AFCCG, PSI and tampering = NOTHING.
The only thing that is different is..... The New England Patriots. That alone is the difference between PSI and tampering being nothing or the biggest scandal in league history.
