1) Ruud was heading to the Practive Squad before he went to IR. He could make the squad, but I expect that he is a long-shot.

2) Woods is an RFA who is capable of starting in this league. I expect us to given him a 2nd tier tender ($2.2M) or a 3rd tier tender ($1.55M). If we lose him we will get at a 1st (unlikely) or a second (possible) which we could use in this draft. He can start and is worht at least the $1.55M as a backup while others like Crable or a new draftee develop. Alternatively, we could try to sign Woods to a long-term deal.

Well from most reports BB seems to like Woods. But I'm not sure if it is worth it to tie up 2.2M dollars in a backup linebacker? We did it once for Green but I'm not sure that Green is earning that paycheck anymore. Wright seems to be more in vogue as backup DL these days. It's really too bad that both Woods and Crable got hurt and sent to IR as they really didn't get to show us much at all and the defense looked like it was gelling pretty good the last 2 games of the season.

I've seen Ruud play in college and I had a lot of problems projecting him into the Pats 3-4 defense. But regardless, he needed to get much stronger to play ILB in the Pats defenseand an off season with Woicik will do that for him.

If he can become a ST demon, he has a chance to stick next season.

Since I'm a Nebraska fan, I hope he makes it. With that said I think it's a good sign that he was placed on IR (i believe with a phantom injury) instead of being released....it means they probably see potential there and want to see if he develops.

So far, the Bo Ruud Story is playing out a lot like the Oscar Lua Story: the Patriots raise some eyebrows by spending a 7th rounder on a lightly regarded ILB who looks undersized for their defense. He doesn't impress much during camp, then gets injured and placed on IR. Fans start murmuring "redshirt," saying the Pats are clearly "stashing" the player to protect him from waivers.

Lua, of course, was waived the minute he passed a physical. Maybe Ruud's story will have a happier ending, but I'm not counting on it.

Unlike Lua, Ruud had little practice or playing time to make a strong impression one way or another. He certainly doesn't have a raving fan club annointing him the next Seau. With Alexander an RFA, I don't see him getting a tender, maybe a one or two year vet minimum contract offer, but Ruud is a cheap alternative to come in and battle for a Special Teams slot.

Quite so, I don't mean to toss Ruud to the dust heap. Mostly I was just reacting to the suggestion that the Patriots cooked up a phony injury to keep away the other teams waiting to scoop him up -- always an unlikely scenario, but especially for a guy like Ruud who was far from a hot property at the end of camp.

Nor do I; I'll never forget him allowing Ahmad Bradshaw to out-"wanna" that fumble recovery from him.
?????

Who judges a player by one play?

Players, Brady included, make stupid plays all the time.

Anyway, fumble recoveries are as much luck as anything else. To pin a players career on his failure to get one specific fumble recovery is silly. There were a lot of things that could have changed the outcome of that game. Will you never forgive Asante or Meriweather for not intercepting at the end? Brady for overthrowing Moss at the very end.

Woods is a good young LB. Not a Pro-bowler, but not a JAG either.

:nono: You mustn't see captain downer's post as a negative! captain downer's karma was New England's good fortune, without it Matt Cassel would have been interviewing with Realty companies in LA while Daunte Culpepper padded his interception and fumble stats as Brady's replacement. Pierre Woods is now guaranteed an outstanding 2009!

I think Woods does a good enough job right now as a backup OLB. I don't see us ever going in to a season with him as a starter, but once a pro-bowl caliber player goes down to injury, most teams don't have pro-bowl caliber players waiting to step in. He should be fairly cheap and knows the system. Classic Pats backup, and there's really nothing wrong with that.

Woods is developing well. BB found him despite Carr's bad mouthing him. Don't forget he was a First round projection off his Sophomore year production, before being banished and forgotten.

Even if he didn't play on regular teams, he is so good on ST that BB would keep him. Izzo may get the Buzz, but Woods has lead the Team on ST tackles for three years straight; unless somebody caught up and matched Pierre in the last few games. He is following the classic Pats DE --> OLB three year development cycle. He has the size, and the speed range, plus the toughness displayed on ST, to be what BB wants in an OLB.

But I think he is a Vrabel, AD in the early making, more than a TBC. Even if he is middling between them and TBC, that is the kind of affordable red-chip player that Belichick garners and covets. I am no longer concerned with his rush LB play, but rather on his developing Pass Rush. Yet Pees, consistently calls him a Pass Rusher. I only hope that Crabel follows in the same footsteps.

OTOH, Vince Redd is a 4-5 year project since he did not play big time football. He is a triangle numbers guy. He must shine on ST to last that long development time needed, on the roster. Off the last few games maybe he will do so.

Meanwhile Gary Guyton has shown that he is exactly what the college experience shows. An ILB only; projecting his speed into OLB was not his forte, and his mediocre or worse play at OLB, will only degrade your expectations of him. That OLB performance took him from a late day one rating to UDFA. BB is good at situation substitution, and putting round pegs in round holes. Then playing square pegs for the square peg plays.

Ruud is a long-shot by comparison, IMO.

I have a strong feeling that he won't be that good. I bet anything that his season ending injury was one of those where they didn't want to give up on the draft pick just yet, but didn't think he could play this year. Maybe he'll come in a different player next year, but I wouldn't bet my mortgage on it.

Interesting take.

You and I are in accord on Woods.

I think Redd will surprise you.

I think the jury is still out on Guyton as a jack-of-a-Linebackers. I see potential.

Glad to have helped.

But seriously, folks, I admit that I'm a Glass-is-Half-Empty guy, but after the manner in which the last 4 seasons have ended, can I really be blamed?

And just for the record, I never wanted Culpepper here.

Hey, if Woods can learn from his shocking lack of intensity/urgency in the SB and become a 4 sack/edge-setting OLB (or at least make us forget TBC), then I'll gladly admit my miscalculation. Crow, after all, is my favorite dish; that, and revenge.

A 2nd-round tender is too high for him at this time. No GM in his right mind would pay him and the FO that much compensation, esp. now that Ratgini & Romeo are no longer in competition for our players.
