Bill O'Brien to become coach of Houston Texans

It's just a hypothetical. BOB has the 1.1, Schaub and Keenum. He'd have to had a world of confidence in Mallett as not just a starter, but as an elite QB, to skip over Bridgewater & Co..

Yeah, I just dont think mallet is worth a 3rd of any kind really, Mid 4th is where i see him based on the talent thats going to be available.

As we've seen with other head coaches, having a bad QB is the kiss of death from a job security standpoint.

IMO BOB has to know something we don't about Ryan Mallett to trade for him and make him their starter over someone else.

Very illuminating article, but ... my goodness! Word of advice to Bill O'Brien. If you need to let your feelings overflow, don't do it to the media. They are NOT there to be your friends.

To be fair, I think the author was incredibly thoughtful and balanced and used BOB's words just to make a point after the fact. He pointed this out specifically as part of his journalistic duties. It was extremely well-written.

There's half of me that wants BOB to succeed just to shut up all the haters that complain that the Belichick tree stinks, and there's a part of me that is now scared of the Texans.

BOB took a great job opportunity with bigger aspirations, walked into a ridiculous situation, and basically pointed the finger at all of the idiots at Penn State and said, "this job sucks right now, we all know it, but I was hired to just help fix this ridiculous mess a bit, and I did it. I'm moving on to greener pastures."

But the fact that he walked in knowingly and took that job believing in himself as a no-nonsense coach makes me believe he might be the best Belichick disciple yet.

So as Sciz pointed out in the draft forum, this may be our last chance to trade Mallett. Will BoB bite?

#1 Clowney
#33 Mallett

I can see McD and BoB having a bidding war for Mallett and Edelman in the offseason.

It's not far-fetched to see Mallett going to the Texans for a mid-round pick(s), probably conditional on how well he plays. Here's the case from the Texans perspective:

(1)Case Keenum is probably staying as the clipboard holder over T.J. Yates.

(2)They are going to draft a QB, possibly #1, who will be penciled in to the #2 in training camp, and allowed to work his way onto the field.

(3)Schaub is the dead man walking, and he'll get cut no later than after the draft with the post-June 1 designation so as to make his cap hit similar to Hernandez's. ($3.5 million that year, $7 million 2015)

(4)Matt Cassel is kept by the new regime in Minnesota as the only competent QB on the roster. (Goes without saying, but Hoyer is brought back in Cleveland)

(5)Thus, Mallett becomes the most attractive "available" QB with experience with both O'Brien and the system he'll most likely be using in Houston. If traded for, he'll be the tentative #1 in place of Schaub.

My guess would be the 4th rounder this year, plus a conditional mid-round pick the year after, would do it for them.

As for why the Pats might do it: they feel Mallett is gone in a year anyways, compensatory picks are no sure thing and are untradable besides, and they have let UDFA rookies backup Brady before (Hoyer).

All these Texans fans who think their team is awesome are completely delusional. Their defense has 2 play makers. Their O-line is a mess. Their WR core has one good player. Their special teams is a disaster. Teams have caught up with Chubby Phillips defensive system.

BOB has some major work to do.

That would, essentially, mean that the Texans are giving up multiple picks for a one year rental of a guy who's never started a game and has only thrown 8 total passes in the NFL. That might be a bit of a tough sell, IMO.

You've never watched a Texans game, then?

I considered an incentive-laden extension to Mallett's contract to be a given.

im happy for BOB and wish him the best of luck, and yes if he wanted Mallett for a 4th I would take it but if BOB is smart he would trade a 4th to the Vikings for vet QB Matt Cassel and take a QB first over all

I always wondered about Cassel hate. He went to TWO probowls.

Sure, you can say Moss made him in New England. He made a fricken' pro-bowl at KC. Get Cassel and draft a QB in round 2 or 3. Don't waste #1 over all on a QB if you get Cassel.

Feel fred to show how. You're wrong about the personnel, so that's not it.

I think it's more on you to prove my points wrong for a team that lost its last 14 games and the answer isn't Kubiak or Foster, Brown and Cushing's injuries.

I'd start by looking at the problems on the left side of their line, their FG kicking, pass defense, QB play and lack of depth at WR.

Got it, although that could make also taking a QB high a bit problematic.

If O’Brien or for that matter McDaniels (if Cleveland hires him) were to trade for Ryan Mallett they would do so for him to be their starter and would not draft a QB in the first 2 rounds in my opinion.

Not when you're way off on things, it's not.

Every team has issues. That's not the same as your original comments.

QB - problem
RB - Foster, Tate (though I don't expect Tate to return)
WR - Johnson, Hopkins
TE - Daniels, Graham
OL - Need to improve on Newton, but generally quite good

DL - Watt, Smith
LB - Cushing, Mercilus
CB - Joseph, Jackson
S - Swearinger showed definite improvement over the course of the season, though he clearly still needed work

P - Lechler

The above is not a bad group, at all.

Houston should just take Manziel and leave it at that.
