Better fit for the Pats at RB - Jonathan Dwyer or Charles Scott?

Dwyer has the potential to grab the lead back position with his power running and Charles Scott could be the type of back to replace Kevin Faulk in 2011.

Dwyer is the more heralded of these two runners,but is he a better selection?

Scott will be a bargain selection in about the 4th round,If the Pats like Dwyer they may have problems getting him at #44 if they pass on him at #22 so while Dwyer has the more talent of the two is he worth a high up pick or grab scott cheap in day 3?

Which of these RBs is a better fit for this team both by draft position and value?

I do know one thing,there is NO DOUBT someone in the RB department is going to be cut by TC,There is no way we use a Geritol bunch this season with almost everyone 33 or over (Maroney excluded at 24)

It's kind of an odd either/or, since Dwyer is generally projected as a 2nd round pick and Scott a 5th.

Looking at all the RBs in that range, I really like Montario Hardesty's well-rounded skillset. A feature back with good skills in the passing game, including blitz pickup, could make the offense a lot less predictable. (If he managed to stay healthy, of course.)

If Starks of Buffalo is 100% healthy, he would make an excellent 7th round draft choice. If he is not 100% healthy BB could sign him as a UDFA and stash him on the PUP or red shirt him on IR.

As far as a big power back, I like Anthony Dixon of Miss State and Gerhart of Stanford. Gerhart put the rock on the turf a ton so that really concerns me.

I don't like Dwyer at all! I hope we dont even have him on the Pats draft board. This kid has always had weight problems and wasn't even in shape at the combine. He had bad combine numbers and his production was based on playing in that goofy triple option offense in which he lined up 2 yards behind the QB and ran straight forward every time!

I would much rather have Charles Scott who operated out of the I-formation a lot and was very productive as a Junior. He got hurt this year in the Bama game but he was having a productive yr before the injury. He is a bigger back that hits the hole and runs hard. I think he will struggle in the NFL turning the corner because he lacks elite speed. He also has an inability to make defenders miss in space because he doesnt have great quickness.

Anyways, I think we should draft Montario Hardesty over these two!

I like Hardesty as long as he's taken with a 3rd round pick or lower.

Hardesty's scouting reports remind me of Antwain Smith. He does everything pretty well, will catch the ball, is willing to throw his body into a pass block, has the power to pick up a couple tough yards (4th and 2!).

On the other hand, his lack of speed makes me think fans would easily frustrate should Hardesty be forced into a primary back role. With this guy I imagine you get a lot of 2 and 3 yard runs. Again, this offense NEEDS a guy to get the short yardage, but we're talking situational player, not full time starter.

I don't like Mathews. He looks like one of those players who is just good enough at the college level to outclass defenders, but at the pro level he won't have the same luxury.

When I see a running back, I want to know how he's going to beat defenders. You can't rely on breaking through arm tackles at this level.

CJ Spiller will run round, he'll leave you with twisted blood.
Montario Hardesty is tough as nails, and has a fantastic spin move.
Jahvid Best will out-pace anyone, he'll will run straight at you then plant, change direction and leave you for dead.


What does Ryan Mathews do?

Kind of a fascinating thread -- I've seldom seen such a wide distribution of opinions on a position here. We might as well just be throwing darts at a list of the top dozen or so RBs.

Though come to think of it, it's kind of the same thing with OLBs this year. Preferences are all over the map: Kindle, Graham, Hughes, Dunlap, Misi, Sapp, trade up for Morgan, wait for Hardy or Te'O-Nesheim...we can't even seem to whomp up any good arguments because you can't find two posters to be on the same side!

Dwyer is the more downhill type of runner out of the two, which is what I would like to see if we draft a RB. So I'll go with him. I do like Hardesty in the later rounds as well.

Injury history will push him down the board and his talent level is much higher than where he will be drafted.

Due to scheme, Scott has less questions but both he and Dwyer are physical bruisers who are hard to bring down when they get to full speed. Does Scott have good hands? and will his lack of speed threaten defenses to make this offense more effective?

All I want is a back that can block for Brady really well. That will keep him on the field more and keep defenses guessing. That is Maroney's biggest flaw. His blitz pickup is poor. Patriots fans have mentioned for a long time that the opponent reads run when he's in. Some of Corey Dillon's big plays were shotgun draw plays. You can't do that unless the back can pass block.

According to reports online (that's all I have to work with) these backs can blitz block coming out.

Maybe Ryan Mathews but I'm getting mixed results.

I'd rank them as Tate, Gerhart, Scott, and then Hardesty. Because I think Hardesty requires the most work but he has the most upside. Tate and Scott are better suited in a zone scheme. Gerhart is the most versatile and has the best feet. Scott is the least athletic but I think he is a little shiftier than Tate. I think I'd wait and take whoever in the 4th; probably Scott.
