Argos release Bethel Johnson

CBC Sports

Kerry Joseph will return as the Toronto Argonauts starting quarterback on Friday, but he won't have Bethel Johnson as a target.

The Argonauts announced late Monday that they had released wide receiver Johnson, who was in his first CFL season.

Johnson had 16 receptions for 189 yards, but dropped several other passes and was slowed by an ankle injury.

Johnson, 29, was primarily used as a kickoff returner in four NFL seasons between 2003 and 2006. He returned two kicks for touchdowns for the New England Patriots and was later on the rosters of the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans.

After starting Cody Pickett at quarterback the last two games, Toronto (4-9) will turn back to Joseph for Friday's road clash with the B.C. Lions.

The Argonauts have been outscored 162-48 during their four-game losing streak.

Toronto also announced that defensive back David Lofton had been let go, just over a week after he was signed. Lofton is the son of former NFL great and current Oakland Raiders assistant James Lofton.

I have fond memories of Bethel despite his failure as an NFL receiver. During his couple years here, he contributed key Kick Returns on STs, helping to win games. A couple grabs of long bombs from Brady and a key TD bomb catch in the frozen bowl playoff vs the Tits, points that were the margin of victory.

Best of luck to a former contributor.

Getting cut from this current version of the Argo's is bad news.

The CFL really isn't a bad league, it's just too small to be as competitive as the NFL. They should merge and add to the pool. We really don't want the Bills. Really really. Even if they are doing good.

I'm surprised that no Bethel upside is surfacing in a league with bigger balls and longer fields than the NFL.

lets go sign him up

The fastest Patriot ever. Proof that speed isn't everything.

he must be a real dick.

He had a ten times better Patriots career than Chad jackson, at least he actually played in a few games, and scored that HUGE TD in the Tennessee playoff game, and the big KO TD just before halftime of the Colt game.

Both guys were 2nd round picks, both guys were actually traded UP for (IIRC) and both guys were abysmal busts.

What does this say about our dear leader?

It says we should fire him and bring back Bobby Greir. He gave us Terry Glenn after all.

Tis true. Bethel contributed some big plays-game changing plays actually. JMHO but I think Duane Starks was the biggest bust of all. Infuriating :ugh:

Please... don't bring him up again. Remember the Denver game? Wow... my grandma could've done better.

It says that drafting pro athletes is highly prone to error and even the very best talent evaluators will end up with some regrettable picks. You want to keep the bust percentage low, but it will never be zero.

Bethel was fast.

But this simply means....... you can't fix stupid.

That explains why the Titans are doing so well with Collins instead of that dumbass Young.

I really think we should bring this guy in for a look.

After all, he's much better than Chad Jackson.

Think about this Keegsie, have you ever seen the two of them together at the same time?

Cue Twilight Zone music

P.S. Add 'Touchdown' Tony Simmons to that list

BB should bring him in for a look see. He liked him once, right? What's changed? He's proven to be too stupid to learn the playbook?

He had minimal production in college, why did BB trade up to draft him again? He always looked tentative and almost scared out there.

Our emperor has no clothes! Usually he can't do anything wrong and I'm the biggest homer our there, but this pick (as well as Jackson) were abysmal.

He's proven he can't draft WR, at least high. Next time he wants to draft a WR and even trade up for it, he should realize his history and just say "no".
