There will be a kid someday who will try to convince you that Mayo wasn't that bad.

That's how this discussion is for me.
mayo didnt stick around for 107 games,

I don't know if you were around back then, but fans (correctly so) disliked Holovak in a similar way to Mayo. The crowd at games chanted "goodbye Mike" who never should have been allowed to coach so long, but he was easy on the Sullivan's checkbook.
I could see this happening in the end of his run. the last two seasons were not pretty... but before that? was he being booed out of the stadium, when the team was posting winning records?

Being fair, the football world was much different back then.

Old timers were NFL fans and the Giants were the local team for them.

The Patriots were a younger crowd, and unlike AFL coaches like Hank Stram and John Madden, Holovak was viewed as a boring non creative coach who was there because the Sullivan's could afford him.

So yes Holovak was disliked for many years.

I still have PTSD from Route 1 after those games. and that was AFTER we'd tailagte for a few hours post game. What a nightmare those unmarked mud parking lots were just to get to the fight up 1, it was like Dodge 'Ems. But we had a great time once we parked, in the stadium, before and after. There was real comraderie to being a Pats fan back then, provided you didn't get run over
I also remember that every game I went to some ass hat security person would confiscate our football when we were peacefully playing catch. The worst was when the DB pretended to be cool and go out for a pass. After that we brought crappy balls and played keep away or generally tormented security when one of them decided that they wanted a ball for their kids.

I can only recall one instance of 'security' giving us any hassle over tossing a ball around. Thinking back on it the thing I remember most about security in the parking areas was how little there was down towards the raceway stables, their golf carts couldn't handle the mud I guess. Hell plenty of cars couldn't lol
