So instead of a 2nd or 3rd round pick, they pay him a massive raise and still lose him to free agency next year for nothing. Granted they’ll potentially get a comp pick, but…
Seems they weren't getting a trade offer that was worth not having a huge piece of their D even if just for one year. They consider themselves Superbowl contenders so they probably preferred to keep him over even a good pick so it probably would have taken something rediculous and they probably only tried so they could use it in further negotiations with the agent.

I guess this only leaves the pipe dream named Micah. And I don't picture Jerry trading him he's stubborn enough to force a hold out.

Yup. And he's another year older and gets much less on fewer years. Lose-lose, I believe it's called.
Yeah, his issue was getting guaranteed money. Guess the one year deal must be guaranteed, and he’s hoping the $30m plus whatever bonus/guarantee he gets this offseason is greater than what he would have gotten now. We’ll see if he’s right. From the Bengals end, they just wasted training camp for nothing if they were just going to bump his salary; could have done that 4 weeks ago.

As a veteran each year becomes guaranteed if their on a roster for 1 week.

Hendrickson is NOT coming to the Patriots regardless of who and what we offer. As a building team in desperate need of young talent even though Hendrickson would give us a quality elite player for the next 3 years, he isn't going to bring as good a price from us than he would to a more mature contender who is one great player away from a Superbowl.

I don't understand why anyone would think the Bengals would want 2 players (and their salaries) that are likely not even starters on a 4-win team when they are in DESPERATE need of defensive help. The ONLY thing that will move Hendrickson from the Bengals is 2 #1's plus a 2nd day pick and we cannot do
something like that. That's a Jet-like move.

And THEN there is this small detail. No one is going to trade for him WITHOUT agreeing to an extension with him of a LEAST 3 years and more likely 4. So why would Hendrickson want to sign with a rebuilding team for his last few elite seasons, when he it is to his benefit to sign with a contender.

He gets $14 million more this year that he wasn’t getting before, and is still a FA after this season, just like he would’ve been without this.

I’d like to lose like that, please.

Sure, sure. Most want security but some smart girls take the cash up front. 31 yr old players all love that first 1 year deal because it's all uphill from there? Downhill from there? Either way, good luck Bengals, you Super Bowl contenders
