In order to clear the air, Kraft (in violation of his own policy) leaked this extension that was probably signed months ago. The timing is indeed to stop the rumors that he was going to throw Belichick to the wolves.

However, it is still way too early to make decisions with regard to the results of the Commissioner's inquiries.

Come on man, cant you at least be a little happy that BB will likely be the coach of the Pats for a long time? Even if you don't like the guy you gotta realize he's a good coach.

(I don't know that you actually don't like the guy but sometimes it seems like it)

I'd say this is great, great, great news, but it's so unsurprising that I'm not particularly excited.

What it is, however, is a great, highly efficient, quiet piece of PR. Speculation about BB's future is really squelched by this.
