I tell you one thing... while I have repeatedly stated there is no one single surefire strategy to guarantee success, I sure wish NE lost an extra game last year.... then we'd have Jayden Daniels instead of Washington, who has gone from 5-12 to 6-2 overnight. Bottoming out seems to have worked well for them.

Our off season moves have more to do with the difference than picking 2nd or 3rd. Daniels would have sat too.

I'm picking at the top of the round and not the middle of the round when staring down a two and six season with five more losses on the schedule that are almost a certainty at this point.

If you want to see your team pick at the top of the rounds, I'm not going to argue with what you want. But, how long do you want to see that for because it's no guarantee they take the right player.

That 2001 team was LOADED if you compare it to the 2024 team. That's how far away we are from competing and it won't be accomplished even in the next two years.

2001 was a year where we could have tanked after Bledsoe went down and we had a losing record when they inserted a 6th round pick at QB.

Even if we had fallen short of the SB, do people think we would have been better off with a high draft pick, rather than the winning culture that the Pats established?

In 2020 they weren't aggressive in FAency or a trade for a vet QB and they didn't draft one either. So what was the plan. I think Bill probably was trying for a trade that never went through and then chose Cam as a fall back.

Mac is what it was. They pretty much had to take one and one from Saban's team seemed to be a no Brainer.

I wish they found a QB in 2018 or 19 when TB was here but they were all in and more concerned about surrounding TB and took Stidham in 3rd. So again you can at least see why it happened even if Sony instead of Lamar stings.

Jayden was the one of the 3 I wanted but right now it's entirely possible all 3 actually turnout decent and of course Jayden is in the lead right now but it's still just Rd 1 this fight is probably going the distance so we'll see. So I see no reason to play the what if game yet I am happy to have Maye.

I don't advise tanking but it's one thing to bottom out and scoop a QB. This debate has been about bottoming out multiple times in a row as some magic elixir to add talent.

What does hindsight have to do with the core of the team going 5-11 in 2000?

The Pats were rated as one of the worst rosters in the NFL going into the 2001 season.

They were not loaded as all those veterans that were drafted high looked a step slower.

You're also sleeping on their last place schedule. The team went 2-4 against teams .500 and above and beat up on the bad teams. Had they had a tougher schedule, they probably miss the playoffs.

I am too. I really like Maye's size, athleticism, and character. I think Maye will grow and get better for years to come.

Jayden's size is a big risk in the NFL. He might survive, but one big hit and he might not ever be the same.

Williams is too much of a wild card for me.

I try to stay away from hypotheticals but I think there is enough smoke to say that there was some meddling going on so it's easy to see why some bring it up. Some definitely take it too far.

Like this for example Bill couldn't be all in because he got clipped at the knees by Kraft who was dead set on being the nice guy and letting Brady choose his own fate. Bill had him through age 42 and could have gone year to year with the tag But Brady threw a fit and Jellyfish Bob gave it away.

Bill not wanting Brady is a fallacy. Bill just didn't want to lock him up through age 45 several years before the end of the last deal. It became a year to year thing where Brady kept asking for it until before the lame duck year where he just insisted on the no franchise and playing out the final year.

Had Bob not given the no clause Brady might have infact held out. I don't believe Brady has that in him though and would have played. Then he would have had to negotiate or risk getting tagged. I think this could have meant one more deal instead of him walking.

Sure Bill being a hard ass was the cause but Kraft held the door open as wide as he possibly could and undermined Bill years before this ensuring that Brady had options.

The thing that pisses me off about 2020 is that Stidham did not take advantage of the situation that fell in his lap. He was not ready to step up and take the starting role when it unexpectedly opened up. He has demonstrated that he has the physical tools to be an NFL QB, he just doesn't seem to have the drive necessary to compete in a game.
