Best show ever
I can somewhat understand it. Wolf is trying to build something where the rookies and young guys get a lot of playing time in year one, they build a culture and establish a baseline even if they don't win much, and then in year 2 they spend more heavily and take a more significant step.Wolf positioning himself to not take the blame...
It feels like there has been a differing of opinion on the timeline of Drake starting. I feel like Mayo wanted him to start early and did his best to tiptoe around saying it a couple times whereas Wolf and AVP wanted him to sit. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the first impasse and Wolf didn't appreciate Mayo's comments on the state of the roster the other day.I can somewhat understand it. The issue is that the young guys are not developing under Mayo (besides Drake, thank god) and the culture is going backwards. So I could see the argument that the personnel plan has mostly gone the way as originally envisioned but the coaching plan has not, and thus a change has to be made there.
I hope that's what's going on. I hope Wolf has a handle on such a plan. I'm not confident that Wolf is any better a GM than Mayo is a HC, but I hope...I can somewhat understand it. Let's also remember that Wolf was promoted AFTER Mayo was given the job - he wasn't Wolf's choice.
I want to dive deeper on my comment. Kraft didn't want Mayo to leave, so they gave him the guarantee in his contract. That made Bill a lame duck, dead man walking. We heard reports and scuttlebutt last year about the undermining of Bill. They had a plan for moving on from Bill before Bill was done, signing his replacement right under his nose. Then for the last year or so, Kraft has rolled out the I Hate Bill TV miniseries and done nothing but try to make the guy look bad, only because he played the odds on a 40 year old QB, albeit the greatest one to ever lace 'em up. The greatest coach ever has been **** on by the owner, when he should be kissing Bill's rings and telling anyone who would listen that Bill was indeed the greatest coach since Lombardi. So now, yeah, Kraft has a big ol' helping of karma, with a overmatched coach and and undermanned roster.
This point cannot be understated enough.Let's also remember that Wolf was promoted AFTER Mayo had already long ago been given the job - he wasn't Wolf's choice.
The hire is Krafts failure. Not firing him if the season continues to be a dumpster fire is another failure. The whole process in hiring a coach was ridiculous to begin with. You don’t do that with a billion dollar franchise. This is not all on Mayo.
This is on the Krafts.
If you end up firing your new coach after one year, you're a bad owner and you don't know what you're doing.
What makes this even worse is that Mayo has not actually had the support he needed to succeed.
He doesn't have great coaches on the offensive side, the front office shot blanks in free agency, and Mayo himself compounded the drop in team culture with his public pronouncements and touchy feeling Pete Carrollish rah-rah routine.
Mayo is going to be a convenient scapegoat, but I will never be convinced he wouldn't have succeeded as a coach if he actually had proper support and also proper seasoning. It is Mayo's fault at the end of the day because he's a coach who can be scapegoated and he went into this situation willingly pushing out his old coach.
Bottom line: this is Kraft's failure.
Weren’t most of the assistant coaching hires on Wolf’s recommendations since Mayo didn’t have many outside connections? That’s not looking promising either.I hope that's what's going on. I hope Wolf has a handle on such a plan. I'm not confident that Wolf is any better a GM than Mayo is a HC, but I hope...
Correct. Most of the coaches are from Wolf's network with Mayo as part of the interview process.Weren’t most of the assistant coaching hires on Wolf’s recommendations since Mayo didn’t have many outside connections? That’s not looking promising either.
