Belichiick liked Vilma who was, and is, lighter than Beason. Crennel's team drafted D'Quell Jackson who was, and is, lighter than Beason. mcbee says it's hard to give up 70 pounds - well it's tough to give up 50 or 60 too.

As far as Beason running a "better" 40 time at his pro-day, players almost always run .1 better at their pro day. The surroundings are comfortable, they are used to the track, and the track may even be slightly downhill as it has been discovered to be at several college campuses. A good rule of thumb is to add .1 to pro day 40s. In this case that jives with Beason's combine time of 4.72.

This is just BS. There are plenty of players who DON'T run better than at the Combine. And your rule of thumb is bunk as well. You have to take into consideration the type of surface they were running on. Were they running on grass or were they running on some kind of turf.

Now a warning sign on Beason is that on March 3rd, he weighed in at only 229. That is 8 lbs lighter than the combine. That isn't a good thing. Part of the reason is his knee injury, I'm sure, but its not good for a guy looking to be an ILB.

As part of his annual predraft scouting trip to Florida, Patriots coach Bill Belichick spent "quite a bit of time" with Florida State linebacker Ernie Sims. Belichick came away impressed, but the Lions ended up snatching Sims at No. 9, well before the Patriots picked (21st). Sims enters today's game against the Patriots with a team-high 109 tackles and has several of the qualities the Patriots generally seek. "He's a football guy. Business. Very competitive. Very intense," said Belichick, noting that even though Sims is undersized at 6 feet, 225 pounds, he still could have fit in the middle of a 3-4 defense. "I think football is important to him and he plays like it on the field. Every play he's after you."

I'm sure you were one of several who liked Jackson, and if I was a fan of a 4-3 team I'd have liked him a great deal. The question I wish to ask all who point to the stories of Vilma and Sims, where are they now? Is it just coincidence they got drafted by someone else?

And while we are asking these questions, where are the people advocating for the 260 lb. OGs?
Can anyone even tell me who was the smallest OL invited to the Combine?
How about who was the smallest ILB invited to the Combine?
What percentage of ILBs invited were under 240? Under 235?
Is there a reason the OLBs BB has on roster are all converted defensive ends? Name me the last Patriot ILB in the Belichick era who weighed in under 245 and was a fan favorite?

People keep telling me these smaller linebackers will get the job done, perhaps they will, but until BB drafts them I'm left wondering what makes them such a fine fit for the NE 3-4? But on behalf of those who harangued me about TBC giving up all the running yards last season, here's a report on the two teams who play the NE 3-4 and have those two popular small ILBs:
- Cleveland 4th to last in rushing defense, tied for 3rd to last in runs over 20 yds.
- NY Jets 9th to last in rushing defense, they only gave up 6 runs over 20 yds.
I was told I didn't know what I was talking about when I said TBC didn't give up the extra yardage alone in a vacuum, so Jackson and Vilma must be the reason these 3-4's sucked against the run. And even if they weren't Jackson's 93 TT and Vilma's 113 TT weren't made that close to the line of scrimmage, on average.

I am highly suspicious of proday times that are significantly improved over combine times. There is ample justification for my suspicion. Whether you choose to be suspicious depends on your own judgment and research. I have no idea how much of either you possess.
