Re: BB Taken out of context re:relacement officials?

I really had mixed feelings about posting this. I think it's another example of too many people writing/blogging and reaching for a story when there is none. But I may be wrong.

So here is the "story", that was on CBS Sportsline:

Bill Belichick sneaks in not-so-subtle shot at replacement refs despite NFL's request - CBSSports.com

I did not take this as BB taking a shot at the replacements when I watched his post game comments. He was asked a question and responded in a typical BB manner.

I'm with you, Mike Reiss commented that talking about the refs is something that normally gets a coach fined, so Belichick simply avoided the question. I too never saw it as a subtle jab at the officials or anything, simply Belichick avoiding a subject in which his opinion doesn't make a difference one way or the other.

Another poorly written, lazy article proclaiming Bill Belichick to be a big bad meanie. You're giving this poorly written, lazy article the web hits it's no name author wants, which is why he wrote another pointless Bill Belichick is a big bad meanie article.

Belichick wasn't taken out of context.

Nut I don't see his reply as noncommittal. He introduced Pereira into the conversation. Pereira's opinion is well known. What we'd call "indirect addressing" in old computer lingo. BB seems like a guy who's smart, usually much smarter than his adversaries. Sometimes he gets carried away with his cleverness a bit much and gets his ass in trouble. Remember his amateur lawyer reasoning regarding Goody's 2006 memo?

That said, I share his disdain for Goodell. And confess that my attempts at wiseass have gotten me in trouble with higher authorities that I had little respect for.

Agreed. Belichick made his opinion known by deferring to the authority of someone who has made his opinion very clear. Honestly, it will be kind of interesting to see whether the league thinks that this is worthy of a fine.

Thanks for sharing the poorly written, lazy article nonetheless. :snob::steamed::eat2:

I saw the link was to CBSsports (nee sportsline - why do you think the name change was necessary - but I digress). Then I knew better than to waste time clicking it.

So, BB's statement was a pointer to Pereira's statements which stored BB's opinion? That's what I thought!

Belichick is an uncommonly disciplined communicator. He had to have known the question would be asked so this is not an off-the-cuff statement that he wishes he had back. My guess is that he intended to voice his support of the real officials as the best qualifed guys to do the job.

Thats how I read it too, hes supporting the real officials without saying anything meaningful about the replacements.

Felger and Mazz has been playing a soundbite of Belichick screaming "go back to high school" presumably directed at a replacement ref. They are also talking about some really bad officiating thats been going on so far. If these bozo's are still there when the regular season starts I guarantee you it will cost some wins for some teams.

There is no excuse for the NFL to let this happen in my opinion.

Sadly this is a business so it doesn't quite work like that. The NFL hard balled the players to the point we nearly lost a season so I don't think they're going to budge on this.

My take on the officials is they look nervous as hell. These guys weren't even given a chance before they got out there...which is why the media tick me off with their criticism now. Theese guys saw that negative press before they set a foot on the field and a heavy spotlight was put on them.

Just watch the games..these guys are SHAKING! Stuttering on words the works! They are going to take some time. This is preseason..we made tonnes of mistakes as a team which resulted in a measly 7 points last week yet we always dismiss this as preseason....

..so let's do he same and cut them some slack...come week 4 of preseason we may see significant improvements.

By a lot of accounts, the refs are asking for a lot from this strike. They have the nerve to sit at home and watch the games and send in lists of mistakes made by their replacements...makes me want to go up and punch the knobs in the face!

I think a lot the replacements are in over their heads. Of course they may get better but a football season is only 16 games. An entire season may stand or fall based on even one of those games.

I do not know the politics of the lock out but the NFL is multi billion dollar industry. You'd think this would be worked out.

You would have liked to think so really.

I hope they do improve through preseason and that this is all down to nerves...even better the NFL works a deal with the regular officials.

Would rather avoid a season of officiating controversies!
