BB and the 2013 Draft

nobody *****ed about those 3 being drafted. It was Duron Harmon that had everyone shaking their heads...he was drafted 4 rounds too early

Ryan, Dobson and Collins were solid picks

Another fan with insight into every team's big board. There is no way that anyone can make this assertion.

Third round picks are for immediate backups/role players who can start in a pinch but who have a good chance to be a starter in time. Pretty much sounds to me like Duron Harmon defined and there fore represents good value at the least.

Logan Ryan remind me of Casey Hayward as a rookie last season for GB. He is aggressive and isn't afraid to make plays on the ball. He had 2 picks and 3 pass defends that's an impressive day for Revis..

I love this comparison although I think you're giving him a little too much credit on his interceptions which told us little about his abilities in coverage. But they did tell us about his hands and concentration skills so they weren't nothing.

I love Jamie Collins I'm actually infatuated with him as a talent, I think he going to be a game changer type next season with a full offseason under his belt. When I say game changer I mean Von Miller impact but more of a impact in coverage and not as big of a sack total; that's how high I am on him.

I too have become increasingly impressed with Jamie Collins as the season has progressed. He's now demonstrating some legitimate ability in coverage, looks to be much more in tune with defensive schemes and has demonstrated his athleticism whilst blitzing at times too. He's far from the finished prospect and I do wish they'd use him more as a pass rusher, but I think he's battling with Ryan to be the best draft pick from this season. albeit still behind.

I do think it's interesting that with all the attention on the receivers at the start of the season, I think currently that Ryan, Collins and Harmon have proven to be the better picks to date. That's not to say I'm not hopeful on Dobson and Boyce because I am, but I think those three defenders are the more likely right now to have long-term Patriot careers, even if as role players and backups.

how about ryan allen ??? kid has been a beast

I told everybody from camp that Allen was outpunting Mesko...got hellaciously burned for even bringing it up...like the Collins pick, I mean, the hatred for that pick was almost tangible...Deus STILL hates it. I thought it was a great pick and now his skills are coming to the fore as he gains experience.

Used to be, we Pats fans would argue the relative merits of drafted players after a few years in the league...now it's "he sucks!!!!" before a player even plays a game.

This, this, this and a 1,000 times this.

Typical Draftnik and anti Belichick BS ! When proven wrong ,... Change the subject!!!

Didn't we start this season with our roster having 25% rookies?? including the UDFA's, in retrospect this has been a haul... no one being considered for ROY, but a lot of keepers who are stepping up and contributing... a lot of guys who look like they have "NLF matured" very quickly.

The only concern are the offensive rookies are slower to develop then expected, however seasoned vets like Joey Galloway et al never developed in this system.

Of course Patterson hasnt been as good as Dobson.

Yup. Even though the Dobson pick wasn't part of the trade, that's the comparison most people will make in the coming years.

It seems like every time Patterson makes the highlight reel, someone here says they wish the Pats had taken him. But I'm good with Dobson in that comparison — and adding Collins, Ryan and Boyce, while also helping get Blount makes the move look very good.

Not only was the draft good, the Patriots have continued adding good young players: Wood, Barker, Kline, Devey, Cave, Moe, Thompkins, Harrison, Jones, Siliga, Grissom, Allen, and Vellano. Some of them are already on the roster and others may be on the 2014 roster.

When you consider that Belichick entered the 2013 draft with less resources than he has ever had for a draft (that I can think of) it is especially impressive that he was able to find so many impactful players who appear at this time to have promising futures in the NFL.

• Jamie Collins – athletic freak who excites me because he has done what great players do when they enter the NFL he has improved week after week. Collins has also stepped up against our 2 biggest opponents this season the Broncos and Ravens.
• Aaron Dobson – he is a very good WR in my opinion, prior to the injury he was playing at an extremely high level. I saw some posters say he does not have NFL hands in the game day thread I was shocked to see that and feel it could not be any further from the truth. Dobson has played in 11 games this season, week 2 was his first game back from a hamstring injury, week 12 he left early due to injury and week 16 was the first game he played in a month, in the other 8 games this season not impacted by injury he has played great football, he was targeted 57 times for 32 receptions, 56.14% reception ratio, 436 receiving yards, 13.62 average 3 touchdowns; project those our over a full 16 games season and that is 64 receptions for 972 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns which is a great season for a rookie. Very few WRs enter the NFL and are great in year 1 if you look at the 2nd year leaps of players like Josh Gordon, Alshon Jeffery, Kendall Wright, Michael Floyd, T.Y. Hilton, Rueben Randle and others it highlights that year 1 to year 2 is a very dramatic for NFL WRs.
• Logan Ryan – snap for snap he has been the most impactful rookie in the NFL this season on the defensive side of the ball. Ryan has played 529 of a possible 1086 snap this season which equates to 48.7% of the defensive snaps, he has 30 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 5 interceptions, 10 pass defends and 1 returned touchdown. Yesterday Ryan’s shutout his opponent not allowing a catch and on the season he is Ryan: 22-47, 278 yards, 3 TDs, 5 INTs with 15 plays on the football total. The most impressive thing about Ryan is that he has not been penalized all season.
• Josh Boyce – I am big fan of him and thought he was playing terrific football before leaving with an ankle injury. Boyce won the Browns game for us without his PI call we don’t know if that ending would have taken place. He has also added something to the kick return game.
• Duron Harmon – he has been a solid player who is always around the football, I have not seen him get beat on any plays which is a good sign for a rookie safety.
• Chris Jones – he was not our draft pick but he was a 6th round pick by the Texans who has really played some great football for us this year. He has not been as impactful in the past few games but he showed us a lot in the middle of the season and may have hit a rookie wall having played a ton of snaps over that period of time. On the season he has 50 combined tackles, 5 sacks, 19 hurries, 4 QB hits, 29 total pressures and 3 stuffs having played in just 11 ½ games.
• Michael Buchanan – personally I am big fan of this kid and think his future is very bright, he needs to learn some discipline and had some size to his length but when he does he could be a real impact player and a force as a pass rusher, of all of our draft picks not named Jamie Collins he athletic ability probably offers the highest upside, in limited reps (under 15% of the team’s defensive snaps) he has 2 sacks, 11 hurries, 3 QB hits for 16 total pressures.

UDFAs have also performed for us, Ryan Allen has developed every week and is kicking as good as any punter in the league, Thompkins has a game winning touchdown receptions and overall has a solid season going and Joe Vellano has contributed more than Kyle Love and Brandon Deaderick combined for last season.

Despite the above recitation of great player acquisition and development, there are still the numerous self-styled Draft Gurus here, who openly proclaim that they are better draft pickers than Belichick, and he should lose his GM position, and become only a Coach.

Four years after BB set out to rebuild his aging and slowing Super Bowl club, the turnover is complete with only Brady remaining. Despite that, BB has never produced less than an 11-5 record and usually better, and has gone to three AFCCGs winning one, and made a Superbowl appearance. Not bad for a "rebuilding" effort, with a Defense incomplete and in transition.

If the Team's players were not denizens of a MASH Unit, they would be clearly best team in the league. Next season they could be absolutely awesome, if healthy.

This injury ravaged Defense has some developed some of the best young players in the league. The Team's sack totals this season are as high as the SB Championship teamsfor the first time in almost a decade. Meanwhile a new generation of offensive stars in the skill positions were baptized in to the NFL this season, as well.

This was a game where every rookie involved stood up and was counted.

Allen was exceptional in yet another game where we needed him to be against a dangerous returner

Collins really was impressive tonight. He is very very intriguing. Forced into action through injuries he has shown to be excellent in coverage. But he just seems so athletic. He has really flashed in pass d and even pass rush in the last game where he just bowled over the RB on the way to the QB.

Dobson coming back from injury blocked well and caught a nice deep ball. He was inches away from a long bomb from TB as well.

Ryan seems to have great ball skills. 2 int's today which were big. Look he has been beat in some key occasions slipping or biting early. But he has proven a playmaker in his 1st season and seems to be a really encouraging talent.

Harmon is an unsung guy. He rarely seems to be beat deep. He is almost always around the ball for deep throws. To compare what I mean, Wilson last year had some plays with INT's and Fumble recoveries but tended to make some mistakes and get beat deep... not what we want. Harmon has been the opposite, he hasn't had the flash but I think if you asked any coach, he has been very solid.

I was thinking about this last night. Many here were scratching their heads at this draft Collins? who? Dobson? too early. Ryan? yeah but in the 3rd? Harmon? never heard of him looks like another BB reach. I am not saying they are all stars but IMO each (including Boyce) has flashed what the scouts saw in them.

If you're talking about the 2007 team that was one of the oldest in league history. . . . There is another.

Part of the allure of taking Harmon was that he played in a similar NE type defense at Rutgers. So, the learning curve for him should have been easier like it must have been for Logan Ryan.

Aspiring NFL Head Coaches need to take heed to what Belichcik has done. BB has developed relationships throughout the college ranks and some are basically grooming Patriot players. Rutgers did.

The Ryan Allen move exemplifies why this team can continue to win 11+ games every year. Most teams don't draft punters and those that do tend to hang on to them. The Patriots drafted a punter, who was an upgrade over previous punters, but they also weren't afraid to replace him with an UDFA who has proven to be better and cheaper. Allen was great on Sunday, and his effort would have much more noticeable if the score had been closer.

The other good thing about having so many rookie free agents is that it should be easier to sign more quality UDFAs next year. They know they'll get a decent shot in TC, regardless of position or draft status.

Keenan Allen >>> Dobson, who dropped yet another perfectly-thrown deep pass from Brady.
