Banks: Why Pioli to Browns will happen

Re: Banks:Why Pioli to Browns will happen

The most surprising thing in that article to me is that the Lions and Rams had no interest. I guess that's why they're the Lions and the Rams.

The big "IF" is ...will Lerner be willing to allow SP the time needed to do it right and will he make him an offer that cannot be refused.

Everyone is so sure that SP is ready to move on and part ways with the dynasty he helped create - I am not so sure.

I think where the was some question in the past on his intentions this time there seems to be more to it. I am not sure Scott is ready to part ways yet but I am pretty sure that he is ready to part ways for the perfect situation. Where in the past I may have thought there was no more perfect of a situation for him. Are the Browns the perfect situation? I think no but maybe the ownership is making it look like it is to Scott

Re: Banks:Why Pioli to Browns will happen

The only reason that there might be some truth is that Kirk Ferentz's name has surfaced. It is highly significant to me. As it implies that Scott Pioli has actually been thinking about what he would do as The Man. So the interview is more than a courtesy; I'll come and listen, it doesn't hurt.

Besides Kirk Ferentz is from the Belichick tree; and unlike Josh and Romeo has worn the HC mantel for several years. He wouldn't be in over his head, as a Head Coach, and has some more maturity. He also has previous NFL coaching experience. Making the jump from a Coordinators job is something where many fail.

Kirk has done that successfully, running the Iowa program. Plus he could then try to import respected NFL coordinators like Josh McD and/or retain Romeo C. Every one of these people knows and has worked with the others. They all know the Belichick and Patriots system on D and O, too.

For the past three years Romeo has been laying the foundation for the Patriots system in Cleveland. The drafts have brought in the key pieces. The LOT and QBs, are aboard; and some of the LBs and players for the D. Brady Quinn was even exposed to the Belichick system at Notre Dame under Charlie Weis. So it would not be as disruptive as a new regime usually is. And there is already some talent there, witness Romeo's 10-6 record the previous season.

I could see it happening.... Unfortunately. :scream:

Aren't the Patriots the "perfect" situation?

I think he'd be foolish to leave until the Brady/Belichick era is over.

They set out to create the greatest dynasty of them all and that goal has not yet been achieved.

Re: Banks:Why Pioli to Browns will happen

IMHO, If I had to predict what will happen going forward, I’d take Parcells situation in Miami and use it as a foundation for what Pioli would be looking for in his new position in order to leave the Pats. His father-in-law’s current job in Miami has a lot of perks, especially for a family man that Pioli is. You can't deny he has probably looked at that and possibly discussed it with either his wife, his father-in-law or both. He would get paid big time $$ to hire a GM and HC and oversee the football operations while making sure the overall structure is in place to build a solid football team. He will not have to be involved in every small detail and also not have to be out travelling scouting college players. If you take all those things into consideration you see why Pioli will listen to Cleveland and possibly KC or others. It has nothing to do with taking all the glory, total control and enjoying nights out in Cleveland with his buddies Shapiro and Ferry, it’s about getting paid more to do less.

This is no lose situation for Pioli since he already has a job he loves in New England, working with his best of friends and if Cleveland, possibly KC or others offer him the above “Parcells” package he would be crazy to turn it down.

If it stritctly came down to loyalty he would stay with the Pats and the man who gave him his professional start in the league, read here: USATODAY.com - Piecing the Patriots together

I would tend to agree - I know he has a lot of fondness for the Krafts and Belichick, and that setup looks to be in place for years to come.

Besides which Randy Lerner seems like an assclown. No matter what kind of promises are made, people like Lerner cannot control themselves for very long. Their essential idiocy will out.

Banks is a tool. Pioli wasn't even Lerner's top candidate for the GM position. That was Bill Cowher. Who turned Lerner down flat.

Nothing that Banks says answers the question of why Pioli to the Browns will happen. In fact, he raises more reasons why it won't happen.

Also, I would think that the Patriots pose an even bigger challenge going into what might potentially be the last season of the salary cap..

Just an point of information. As long as McDaniels is under contract with the Patriots, they are not obligated to allow McDaniels to go anywhere that is just a lateral move. In fact, they wouldn't even have to allow McDaniels to interview with the Browns.

If there is anything that working with BB has shown Pioli, its that a two headed monster for putting the team together is what gets the job done. The Coach tells the GM what he needs, the GM goes it gets its with input from the coach. All the successful teams are like that.

Its truly my belief that BB could no more fire Pioli than Pioli could fire BB.

Have to agree. This article basically says Pioli is leaving because "everyone feels" it's time for him to go (rather than Pioli has actually indicated he will leave).

Lerner is effing this one up good. Demanding an answer "today" from the top prospect is an act of desperation. Each tick of the clock gives me hope that this is deal is dead.

the Ball drop will have extra meaning tonight provided I don't hear otherwise

Sorry Deb, But you and many others seem to think Pioli will somehow stay forever. I'd heard this being debated on EEI and one bit of info people are forgetting is; Pioli is probably making 800k - 1 mil a year in NE. The man is/will get offers approaching 5 mil a year contracts.

He will leave at some point.

Demanding an answer 'today' works with a new college grad looking for his first job so that he doesn't go on other interviews. Not so at this level when you have to work so close with each other.......SP may just be testing the waters with the blessing of BB and the Krafts..Sort of a 'go out and see what's out there' then come back home....hopefully...

Pioli was making approx $880K before he re-signed in 2005, it's closer to $3 mil per now.

If its all about money, then I see Kraft increasing Pioli's salary. Somewhat like when a college coach turns down another offer and gets a nice home bonus.

I doubt it's all money...and I THINK he is just looking around..seeing what is there..teh KC situation MAY be better for him..

First of all, where the hell do you get that Pioli is probably only making 800K or only 1 mil? Seriously. The only thing that is more closely guarded than the salaries of Pioli and Belichick are the Launch Codes for the Nukes owned by the United States.

Pioli has been with the Pats for 9 years. He's won Executive of the Year twice. Has helped put together 4 teams that went to SBs.

If I was a betting man, and I am, I'd say $50 bucks that Pioli is making in the 2.5-4 million range already because Kraft knows how to take care of his employees.
