Baldelli to be signed, also..

I agree, plus the Sox have checked him out and I am sure they know everything there is to know about his health situation and how much he will be able to play

Smoltz and Baldelli would be awesome additions.

you have to love the local guy balldeli from RI. im sure hes thrilled to be coming home to play for the team he grew up rooting for.

Would be a good depth signing with coco now gone.

It said in the article that Baldelli didn't grow up a Sox fan even though he is from the area

Someone told me a lot of Italians in RI grew up as Yankee Fans because of Joe DiMaggio. Don't know if its true.

Oh well, I bet he's a sox fan now

Hey, you have to give the Red Sox front office major, major credit here.

The Yankees make a HUGE splash in free agency, sign the best available bat and the two best available pitchers, and the Sox brilliantly counteract those moves with Penny, Smoltz and Baldelli.

Smoltz is 112 years old, coming off of major shoulder surgery and Baldelli spent most of last year on the DL and Penny sucks.

WOW, can't you just feel the juices flowing, I can't wait to see this trio in Sox uni's this year.

This is the result of winning two World Series this decade and going to the ALCS 4 times; the front office now feels like close is good enough, we won two World Series so the fans will keep coming to the ballpark like suckers and shelling out a mortgage payment to come to the game as a family of four.

What an effin joke.

I love the signing of both Smoltz & Baldelli.

It is short money and both are worth the risk.

Smoltz pitched great at Fenway during interleague games.

I have a feeling we are going to trade Buchholz.
Buchholz for Salty is fiine by me.

Anybody but Varitek.

As an Italian, from Boston, I can tell you that is very much true. Lots of old school greasah's followed the Yankees cuz of Joe D, and the long standing tradition of Italian ball players that made their way through that franchise. When my cousin brainwashed me as a kid, he specificially talked about that.

A 4th outfielder who can throw out runners at home ... so valuable on a well rounded club. I am really surprised Baldelli wasn't pursued by more teams. Playing at Fenway I don't think we pursued that talent enough over the years ... I'm glad Rocco is on our side.

Good 4th outfielder. A lot of people seem to like Baldelli. So I suppose this is a pretty good move and probably for not much money either.

There is one major difference between us and the Skankees, we already had most of our pieces in place and almost made it to the WS last year, and they came in third in the division and their team was falling apart. We didn't need to go out there and break the bank for 3 players when we already have at least a playoff caliber team we just needed to solidify a couple of spots which we have done except for catcher which will be next. Bottom line is that it is hard to compare us and the Yankees because we have different needs.

Very well said; my point I guess is it seems like the majority of the free agents the Red Sox bring in have some sort of health issues; all I keep hearing is IF Smoltz/Baldelli/Penny/their newest 38 year old Japanese reliever is healthy, this will be a good signing.

On another note, I really, really hope the Sox tell Borass you d!icked us around with Luxurytaxiera, so GFY, we don't want Jason back, good luck finding a sucker to pay him what YOU think he is worth.

the yankees had to sign the players they did. they are getting old very fast. they still will be a third place team. jeter arod posada damon matsui all getting up there in age and some of this group are banged up all the time or coming off serious injuries.

It's true that the majority of the Free Agents we bring in are health risks, but we are able to bring them in because we fully evaluate them and we know that if they are brought in they can be able to play with our amazing training staff making sure they stay healthy. The point is if there is any question about them being able to play they probably aren't going to be given a contract
