Ashton Jeanty at #4

Salary for number 4 pick is 9.5 million a year and that's close to bordering Barkley level. No way you take a RB with 4th pick .
The cap seems like a lesser reason for taking him vs. several others. This team won’t be pressed against the cap.

Agree though on not going RB that high unless clearly generational type of talent

You need to look at that as well. You might as well get the best veteran rb in free agency for lesser money without expending on draft capital.

After 10 possibly yes. Definitely not top 6 for RB, te, guard , center . Top 6 is QB, WR, DE ,CB and rare scenarios DT.

This team has major problems on the line. Why even bother even IF he becomes special ? Pass.

No offensive line, why take a RB who won't be able to run many times due to poor blocking

If we draft him, he'll be signing a 4 year deal with an option for a 5th year. And as much as we hope for a 1 year turnaround story, the least talented team in the NFL like we are doesn't USUALLY turn it around in one year. We can point to all the worst to first examples we like, but we can't lose sight of the fact that it isn't the norm. This is most likely going to still be a multi year effort before we're really cooking with gas, even though they should be pushing for some incremental improvement right away.

You are both correct that a special RB is going to be limited behind a bad OL. It'd obviously be more ideal to fix the OL this year and then add a special runner later. But 2 years from now, whether you added a special runner in 2025 and fixed the OL in 2026 or whether you fixed the OL in 2025 and added a special runner in 2026, you're in the same spot. It literally makes no difference from that point on. You really just have to play the cards you're dealt in terms of which players are available. SAM's point in the thread is that he sees Jeanty as the special runner but none of the OL options at #4 as legitimate high end solutions. If that's the case then that's the case and you just try to draft as well as you can with who's on the board.

Not bad but it was on 30 carries for a season low 3.5 ypc.
I watched that game
He had a monster year but he flat out sucked that game
2 fumbles and was bottled up till the 4th quarter when he got some yards while Penn state had a big lead and defended the pass, they fed the ball to Jeanty who had one large run and garbage time stats

Not really the way I remembered it. Score was 24-14 when Jeanty had 28 and 10 yard carries to help get them down to the 21 yard line so the kicker could miss the fg. That was in the first 5 minutes of the 4th quarter so I wouldn’t consider that garbage time just yet.

Thought they were up a bit more but I trust you
What I do remember clearly was Jeanty fumbling twice. I believe his team recovered one of them
But they had him bottled up for 3 quarters
He had 30 carries. You say 2 were fore 38 yards in the 4th quarter.
That means 28 of them in the first 3 quarters for 67 yards (2.2 yds/carry) and 2 fumbles

It was his only bad game all year
He lit it up this year
Almost broke Barry Sanders record.
But he layed an egg on the biggest stage

You have to have the OL first. Look at Barkley with the Giants and now with the Eagles. Jeanty is a terrific back but at #4 with no OL and his size.....

If there was a better option at #4, I am all for taking it. But assuming Hunter and Carter are gone...who is the more talented better option.
I also doubt there will be a good trade down option for the pats at 4. I suppose they might get a third rounder to move down 5 or 6 spots...but doubt they are getting more than that in a weak draft year at the top.

The OL can be improved through FA and perhaps through year 2 jumps from last years draft picks and Marrone's coaching.

A real RB threat like Jeanty could open up opportunities for the passing game. He is a receiving threat and if he is like Ladainlian Thompson it would add a whole new element to their offense.
He has been durable as hell, does not fumble much and is great between the tackles.

The team desperately needs playmakers....there will not be a better playmaker available at 4.

With whom?

You mean the Eagles oline that consist of a 7th rd LT, 2nd rd LG, 2 RD C, a mediocre/bust LT signed and converted to RG and a RT that was drafted in 2013?

You don't need to spend the #4 overall pick to fix the oline. You just need to sign good players and draft the right ones. They have Owenu, Andrew's and Strange for the interior oline to start next season. Let's see who they sign in FA before deciding the oline sucks or not.

If we take a RB at 4 im legit rioting

No way would I take a RB this high for a team with so many needs lol

They desperately needed a LT in the 2023 Draft. Belichick took Christian Gonzalez. Many here were pissed if that he took a CB.

Was Belichick right or wrong?

While I understand that needs drive picks, when there’s a great player there for the taking then take them, and fix the need another way.

Jeanty isn’t at the top of my list at 4, but I won’t be pissed if they take him, it would give them a great run game for Maye to be able to rely on.

Personally I would rather take Hampton with their second pick, even if they have to trade up to get him.

There are many ways they could improve the offense. One would be to trade back a few spots for a 2nd rd pick, take Tyler Warren in the top 10, then package a 2nd and a 3rd to move up for Omarion Hampton with it. 2 really good players to help Maye out considerably.

I can’t take a running back at 4, I can’t do it.
This isn’t Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk, Ladanian Tomlinson, Saquan Barkley,
Sometime sell me on this.
I've seen him comped to Tomlinson.

According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, NFL scouts and coaches have compared Jeanty to some excellent running backs from the past, including LaDainian Tomlinson and Maurice Jones-Drew.

Do you prefer taking a guard with short arms at 4 (Campbell) or a twig DT (graham)?

Its a very weak draft at key positions
Jeanty is a game changer not just a rb

The outdated idea that elite rbs who are also receiving threats have low value is outdated.
Take the best player available

".....ultimate yardage creator, with the talent and skill set to succeed independent of the quality of his blocking. Jeanty’s speed forces linebackers to flow hard outside, creating cutback lanes and chunk runs, while his vision, balance and elusiveness get it done along the interior. The threat of what he can do on the ground should create ideal play-action opportunities for his team, allowing his next play-caller to, say, unburden a young quarterback or any other passer being asked to shoulder too much of the offense. He’s compact and muscular, but there could be some minor concern surrounding his massive workload in 2024. This top-flight running back is capable of becoming the face of an offense in a league where the pendulum might be swinging back to the running game. Jeanty has future All-Pro talent."

seems like exactly what Pats offense needs. Also Vrabel and McDaniels love the run and play action.
Does anyone here actually believe Campbell or Graham would impact teams's success next year as much as Jeanty?

I like Jeanty but if we are being honest, he racked up his stats playing against the future doctors, lawyers and accountants association of America. You just aren't facing that much NFL talent on the defenses of Utah State, Hawai'i and Nevada-Reno.
