You have to be fair here though, his game managing years were pretty exxagerated. The team he walked into was 5-13 until he stepped on the field, belichick thought he was getting fired. The team immediately went 11-3 and won a Super Bowl, did he dominate? No, did he bring something massively valuable to the team? Yes

He only threw one TD in the entire 2001 postseason, he also only turned it over once. His contribution was more about taking the short easy checkdowns and converting on third down and being more efficient than Drew. In 2001 the majority were screaming for Bill to put Bledsoe back in and bench Brady when he returned from injury.

But as the years went by, the game manager tag was misrepresented, he led the league in TDs in 02 and was elite by 03, as he was runner up MVP and also received votes in 05.

Tom Brady even after he improved his body from 2000-2001 didn't make a career by throwing dumb passes... or passes that his new improved stronger arm bailed him out of.

He became the GOAT by being the smartest player on the field and doing things the right way more than anyone else... by being hyper efficient. He made mistakes of course, but what separates him from the absolute best wasn't his arm strength, it was his TD to INT ratio, his efficiency... he rarely made mistakes.

This notion Mac or Zappe can’t be good because they’re not 6’6” tall or can throw it 100 yards is nonsense. Brady and Montana were never the biggest or had the strongest arm. The position is largely decision making and motor control.

Those early teams were buoyed by a power rushing attack and a ferocious defense. It was a team effort and it always is… even after Tom became a dominant player in 2007 and beyond.

Not sure what this post signifies, originally you included how mediocre he was for his first 5 years, then when given the stats you post that he was only a game manager for 1 year. So we agree, you can get away with 01, not much after that

The game was a lot different 22 years ago.

Not on the OL. Since the dawn of the game, the OL's job is still the same. Get a body in front of another body and either create holes in the front 7 or protect the passer when he throws. Priorities might change. The skill levels might have changed. But the basic components of the game are, dare I say, eternal.

The last big change in the OL was when they allowed them to extend their arms. THAT was a HUGE change. Now blocking, especially pass blocking, is done with your hands, rather than heads and shoulders. THAT happened in 1978 (which was earlier that I thought, btw). So what it took to be a good offensive lineman in 2001 is the same today. Only the sizes and skill levels have changed.

The changes we are seeing now is the trend is going toward more athletic OLmen with quicker feet to combat the smaller and even MORE athletic edge rushers. Matt LIght, whose weakness was ALWAYS speed rushers) didn't have to see guys who run 4.5's almost every week. That IS a change, but it doesn't mean that the techniques, drills, and the skills that they look for are vastly different than the ones 20 years ago.

The defense carried the 2019 Buffalo team; they were 7th in DVOA. The offense was 21st. Allen was along for the ride.

You know I've ready this entire thread, and even made a few comments, but I have YET to read the article that prompted this thread. Why? Because like you said, it doesn't mean **** and was worth reading.

REGARDLESS of where you stand on the issue of how good or bad Mac Jones is, articles like this don't mean anything at this point of the season anything more that pass completion percentages during shorts an T-shirts practices. But we will STILL get them because these guys have jobs and their jobs are to create CONTENT, regardless of the time of the year.

BTW- we really need to keep OUR thread content on point. Someone made a point where they essentially made the point that sometimes QB's take a few years to mature and develop and gave the example of Josh Allen. After that, over a third of this thread has been populated with posts about the pros and cons of ALLEN'S development.

Well I don't CARE about Josh Allen and his development. I care about Mac Jones'. A comparison between the two would have been fair. Even a post or two disputing when he actually became a "franchise QB" But a THIRD of the thread? It's like we are LOOKING for things to be mad about.

Skip Bayless has confirmed this story with another coach on Bill’s staff who was his friend. After the 0-2 start (now 5-13 since 2000), he told Skip he was under the impression Bill and the entire staff were going to get fired sometime that season, so he put his home up for sale. He obviously ended up taking his home off the market.
