Anyone that needs to be warned that hot, fresh coffee might cause severe burns is too stupid to function in society. Don’t blame McDonald’s for serving a product people want.

I’m sick of corporations paying millions of dollars because people are too stupid to know that you don’t eat laundry detergent and coffee is hot.

The temperature of the coffee served at that McDonald's restaurant was measured in the 180f to 190f range. The plaintiff was a 79-year-old woman who spent 8 days in hospital undergoing skin grafts on her upper thighs.

The jury awarded the woman $2.86M, including $2.7M in punitive damages. The judge reduced the award to $640k. The woman appealed and McDonald's settled out of court for an undisclosed amount, presumably somewhere between the $640k and the $2.86M.

The suit and settlement didn't even register in McDonald's financials. The corporation's earnings-per-share continued its steady 15% y/y increase throughout the period and after.
