Amendola contract lower than originally reported

So that is 8 mill in cap hits the first 2 years compared to 12 that Welker is hitting Denver.
So we really didn't give Welkers money to DA did we?
I wonder how embarrassed people who overreact without knowing the facts actually get?

That said, I'd still rather have Welker for $12mm than Amendola for $8mm.
Very high degree of certainty on the results. Tom Brady happy. Still $4mm savings from last season, to allocate to pass defense. Welker for $12mm is a good deal.

This is exactly why I thought people were silly to cry about the 5 years, $31 million until we saw the details. This is a very team friendly deal. If Amendola can stay healthy and produce, people will be talking about he is vastly underpaid by year three or four.

Well his salary rises by 1m per year so I doubt he will ever feel underpaid. If Amendola produces then he will have earned his money each year. If the Pats are tight on cap they might approach him to renogotiate. But the bonus money and everything look very fair. Only 3.5m cap hit this year gives Pats lots of flexibility.

I'm not a real self-back patter, but can I toot my own horn just a bit? While everyone was freaking out about paying Amendola the "same" or "more" than Welker, I posted my guess on the day he was signed about the likely cap implications. I was $4 million high, because of the bad report of it being $31 million, but basically I nailed it. I had the singing bonus at $6 million. I had the misc. bonus at 500k, and I was pretty close on the first two years of cap hit, plus the dead money to cut him after years 2 and 3. Since this is likely to be the first and only time I'm right about anything, I am going to preserve what I said for posterity:

Signing Bonus $6 million. 2013 salary guarantee. Some sort of injury protection bonus after 2013, maybe.

2013: $2 million salary, $1.2m signing: $3.2m cap hit
2014: $2 million salary, $1.2m signing + 500k misc.: $3.7m cap hit
$5.1 million dead
2015: $4.5 million salary, 1.2m signing + 500k misc: $6.2m cap hit
$3.4 million dead
2016: $7.25 million salary, 1.2m signing + 500k misc: $8.95m cap hit
2017: $7.25 million salary, 1.2m signing + 500k misch: $8.95m cap hit

This contract is NOT backended. I expected $6M, $7M and $8M for the last 3 years. The actual numbers allow the patriots to have him compete in each of those years, and then be cut if he isn't worth it.

When you factor in Welker at 32 after over 1000 hits in his career, and Amendola 27 with less wear and tear due to missing time with fluky injuries, it isn't really that easy.
What if Welkers increasing level of drops continue to escalate?
Welker will never again be as good as he was in his 6 years here, and Amendola is only going to get better. That has to come into play.

I read that as a $6 million bonus plus $4 million of salary guaranteed over the first two years.

The following are the contract figures for Danny Amendola, per a source.

It's a five-year pact with a total value of $27.7 million.

2013 -- $2 million (fully guaranteed)
2014 -- $3 million ($2 million guaranteed

So basically I look at this as a $10 million 2 year contract in the worst case scenario, which is how it was originally reported ($3.5 million less than originally reported for the total)

In the best case scenario they have him locked in affordable for 5 years. Hopefully it's the latter and not the former.

I'd still rather have Welker at 2 years $12 million but as much as everyone wants to blame Belichick, it seems to me Wes wanted to play elsewhere

No, it's 2/12. He gets $5 million is salary, $6 million signing bonus, and $1m misc bonus in years 1 and 2 combined. If he gets cut after year 2, his total cap hit is $12 million. (3.7 in year 1, 4.7 in year 2, and 3.6 dead).

The passing game is being re-worked. It will not center around a slot back, even if he is the best in the game. We almost saw that at the beginning of last year. The media and we went absolutely apoplectic. How dare anyone suggest lest emphasis on Welker. Injuries did not allow the plan to come into fruition last year. The time has come.

Amendola can be an outside or a slot receiver.

The open question is who we add/re-sign. We had Lloyd, Edelman and Branch. We will have ????.

Fans and GMs are rightly concerned about cap hit, but the difference of a few million in real money payed out obviously is the bottom line for both the player and the owner. Like any good businessman, Kraft isn't looking to shell out a few extra million if the player isn't worth it - regardless of whether it's already counted on the cap.

My hope is that Amendola is worth the full value of his contract

With three starting TEs plus Amendola and other additions to the receiving corps, I think McDaniels probably has some ideas of how such tools could confound defenses unprepared for such a unique lineup

This evolution actually started last season when they claimed Ballard from the Giants. The early 2012 season experiments using Welker less than before also indicated that he might not be in their long term plans.

The $2.3 mill cap savings NE is getting compared to the WW/Denver $6 mill guaranteed salary is significant. With limited draft picks, a large number of roster holes, and a depressed market, NE has a real opportunity to add legit veterans verses 90 man camp roster fodder.

You read it wrong. The $31k roster bonus is a per game roster bonus. Every game he plays, he get a bonus. It makes a decent portion of his contract to staying healthy.

Widely circulated as a five-year contract worth $31 million, the total value is actually $28.5 million and $2.5 million of that are per-game roster bonuses of $31,250 that are included in each of the five years of the deal.
