Re: Albert Breer

Amazing analysis.

Re: Albert Breer

Breer has been doing a great job all season, between himself and Reiss, we should consider ourselves lucky to have the kind of coverage we do of our favorite team. Breer has also been appearing on FSN Sports Tonight more often and does a great job on that show, hopefully he keeps taking the place of some of the tools they tend to have on there to discuss the Pats.

For those of you showing the Breer love you ought to be aware that unless the Herald reaches a content sharing agreement, Albert might not be on the Pats beat, for the Herald anyway. Here's more.

http://www.bostonsportsmedia.com/shots/

The pending Sept. 3 termination of a content-sharing agreement between the Boston Herald and Gatehouse Media will have far-reaching ramifications for Hank Hryniewicz's sports department. Hryniewicz confirmed the end of the partnership which commenced in 2006 when the CNC group was sold off by Pat Purcell.

The Herald Sports Editor confirmed in an email response to Shots that the content sharing agreement with Gatehouse Media's titles, which has been in place since 2006, is just days from terminating.

"I'm told the decision to end the agreement is a mutual decision by both parties," said Hryniewicz, who stands to lose the print and electronic services of such up-and-comers and standouts as Albert Breer (Patriots), Douglas Flynn (Bruins) and Mike Biglin (Soccer, Revs). "I think both CNC [Gatehouse] and the Herald benefited from the deal while it lasted, at least speaking from a sports standpoint. The school boy coverage was magnified by both organizations as a result of the sharing. I also think we benefited from having writers like (them)."

Breer could arguably be the most costly loss for the Herald and the most important gain for the Gatehouse side. While the Herald has been throwing numbers at the Pats beat (Mark Murphy and Jeff Horrigan have each seen reps during Pats' camp), Breer has been the Herald's most prolific pigskin blogger.

Great analysis as usual.

Overall it was a tremendous game. Everything was positive even the negatives are so minor and can be worked out.

Ups
  • OLine - Hey QB while you are passing out cigars give out 5 to the big boys up front. Sure there was some clear whiffs on a couple of running plays (Neal, Kaczur, Koppen), but better to whiff on a running play and gain 1 yard then whiff on a blitz pickup and get the QB killed.
  • QB - Looked great.
  • Maroney - Changes the whole offense.
  • Defense - Lead by Wilfork, very solid effort and 4 impacts players will be joining the team (Seymour, Warren, Samuel, Seau).
  • Wilfork - Lets just extend him now, the kid is a force.
  • Morris - He may not be a pure short yardage plow horse but he he is versatile and a very good receiver.
  • Mills - He is not a Lorenzo Neal but he did enough to help in some of the short yardage plays. The fact that they had him in the game on the short yardage situations indicates that they want him to make the team.
  • Watson - Couldn't come down with one in the end zone but played very well. I loved that they lined him up wide and allowed him to get a full head of steam for his blocks instead of just lining him up in-line.

Downs (so minor)
  • Woods - Missed a few special teams tackles.
  • Brady's deep pass to Stallworth - Could have been the worst pass I have ever seen get completed, lame duck city.
  • Sanders - Seemed ok against the run but was out of position on a couple pass plays.
  • Merriweather - I agree with Breer's comments about Merriweather, the kid can hit and looks to be a natural Safety but was a step behind as a CB.
  • Final Receiver spot- Too close to tell, Gaffney's injury may have set him back. Caldwell ran some nice routes but seems to be out of the mix. Washington is nothing special but does play special teams and they used him as a blocker on the outside on several plays.

Take-away message from Breer says it all:

That was an impressive display of what this team can be, and without even having headliners Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Samuel and Randy Moss on the field.

That's a heck of a lot of talent missing to still look that good.

Nitpick of the day for Breer: Willie Andrews ain't no rookie! Nice to see him get props, though. And nice to see him developing so well on defense, since he's a force on special teams...looking more and more like an every-game-active player.

Re: Albert Breer

Amazing analysis.

Take a bow Albert.

I agree. That was an excellent analysis by Breer. His take on Merriweather is spot on, IMO.

Great analysis, but I do not agree on Merriweather. While he seems slated to replace Wilson at FS, I still think he shows plenty of coverage skills. I think he can be a corner.

I think the comment on Brady's pass to Stallworth is wrong. Brady deliberately underthrew Stallworth after seeing that the CB was not looking back and he threw it so DS could come back and make the play just like he did.

Breer is awsome, I love reading his stuff and the Tale of the Tape is the best of his stuff.

I'm glad that Breer mentioned that Stallworth still has a ways to go.

As an example: on 3rd down (and very long, because of the iffy holding call on Neal), Carolina sent a blitz.
Brady, who may not have had a safety valve in the play, waited for the patterns to develop, but then had to throw off his back foot when the heat arrived.
Stallworth had run to the sticks, and under normal circumstances, that would have been the correct procedure.
However, because the situation was 3rd down, and no gain meant a 52-yard FG attempt, and the defense was blitzing, the correct procedure was that Stallworth should have broken off his route a little early, and then come back for the predictably short pass.
He still would have been open and, had he caught the pass, would have given Gostkowski a more-managable attempt of < 40 yards.
Shortly thereafter, the TV showed TB and DS talking on the sidelines. I wouldn't be surprised if they were talking about that very same thing.

Situational football, folks. Learn it, love it. That includes you, Dante.

Great post Capt. Makes this forum worth reading.

Thenkyoo, thenkyooverymush.

That's why TB named the kid after me.

Outstanding read.
Nice work.
