A trade for Donnie Edwards would go a long way towards helping LB depth chart...

Great analysis PFnV. Add to that, the article stated that Edwards played 10 games last year with torn knee cartiledge????? Beisel for Edwards......NOW!!!!!!!

There's simply no way San Diego would make that trade. Edwards for Beisel?? Only if the GM is the biggest of idiots.

Gotta love trade speculation though.

Wow. I think he's one of the most underrated LBs in the league.

There was a thread on KFFL about this a while ago. I, too, thought he was underrated, but he's really not, or so that's the impression I got. Don't know why we'd want an LB that makes tackles way beyond the LOS.

I don't really want Edwards. Overrated.

That's easy to type. Care to elaborate?

you think hes underrated because you think stats mean a lot more. why would SD fans say that if hes so great..wouldnt they praise him and ***** that hes underrated? yes some do but a lot more of them say hes overrated.

hes 227 pounds..give or take a few. hes 33 years old..if hes been making that many tackles and also has an injury issues .. how much u willing to offer? why we hating on Beisel again..he gained weight..coaches kept him around. did we keep Starks another season after playing a bad 1? Or Chad Brown? We released them both..Chad is back now because hes supposivly in much better shape and understands more.

Even if we could get Edwards, that doesn't solve the "aging" LB dilemma we have.

probably 1 reason we let Willie go. age. we need to get younger..secondary got younger overl ast few seasons with Law gone, Poole gone etc. Our DL is very young and good. Time for LBs.

Read the article at the top of this thread. Obviously that is a very negative situation out there. Smith publicly blasting the guy. If Smith really doesn't value Edwards, why not get a younger, bigger (both very important to Smith re: Edwards evidently)starter from the Patriots?

Maybe because, according to KC Joyner, he was 72 out of 122 in yardage given up per tackle?

I remember reading that thread and saying.. They play a 3-4.. A lot of plays are made behind the line of scrimmage.. Yes maybe the guy makes a few downfield but that means he has a non stop motor.. Go look at his tackles for losses.. They are good for his scheme (compared to other 3-4)..

He doesn't have a "few" downfield. He's in the lower half of all LBs measured.

During the BB era, the Pats have been careful to keep a mixture of ages - - particularly on D. Since the D right now is rather young (except for Rodney and Tedy) why not have another older player out there (one who had over 150 tackles last year so is not incapacitated or anything, is very bright - can pick up the D quickly and who is a Pats type player).

No, I think he's underrated because every time I'm watching the Chargers, and the Chiefs before that, he makes tackle after tackle. You keep saying he makes tackle after tackle yards beyond the line of scrimmage (like Beisel does when he bothers making a tackle at all), but I've never noticed that. He does chase down a lot of plays from the backside, but that's a positive, not a negative. Honestly, IMO he's better than Bruschi (although that doesn't necessarily mean he's better in the Patriots' system), he's better than Zach Thomas, he's better than Ray Lewis. IMO, if Edwards played on the team that gets a lot of media love, say Philly, Pittsburgh, Dallas, etc, he would make the Pro Bowl every year. Like Keith Bulluck (IMO the Best LB in football), he's suffered from playing in a town that's relatively anonymous as far as football teams go.

It is true that Belichick prefers his linebackers larger. No question. Let me ask you this: Which would he prefer? A 255 lb unproven linebacker, or a 230 lb one who's proven he can do the job?

Wow. Completely and utterly ridiculous.

Here's the danger of relying on defensive football stats - - it ain't baseball.

SD was the best team in the NFL last year vs. the run. Edwards' job (as BB puts it "Just do your JOB") was to be the stopgap after runner got past the blasters. Edwards importance is his lateral movement (something Beisel is just OK at) Yes, his tackles tended to be at the 4 yd area, but he was there for depth so that those 4 yarders wouldn't get turned into 15 yarders - - hhis teammates and fans seem to realize that this was an integral reason why the Chargers were #1 against the run.

It ain't Rotisserie Baseball.

Great point. Jack Bauer would probably tell Edwards not to run down a big play 'cause it would only hurt his "stats".

You know Mr. Bauer, Ben Watson has a totally AWFUL "yards per tackle average" after that play on Champ Bailey!

Yes. SD did have a good defense against the run. I would submit that that was in spite of Edwards, not because of Edwards. They have one of, if not the best NT in football, a great DL as a whole, and solid LBs for the most part. Don't believe me? Here's what Joyner had to say:

K.C. Joyner: Edwards ranked 71st among linebackers in yards per POA run against him. There were 118 LBs that I rated this year, so that puts him in the lower half. He did rank lowest among all Chargers LBs, so it wasn't a problem with the rest of the team. He just isn't quite as good as he used to be.

Don't get me wrong. He's a pretty good backer and he's still above average in coverage. But he's not underrated, and he is NOT better than Lewis, Thomas, etc. That's just one of the most patently absurd things I've read here in some time.
