"By the way, the iron-clad standing of that five-year, $57 million deal that Robert Kraft professed to Peter King was not the way influential folks in the Brady camp painted the deal."

Patriots dropped the ball with Wes Welker - Sports - The Boston Globe

What a gift .....delivered on a platter.
Controversy
Deception
Betrayal
Power struggle.
An owner loving the limelight
I hear ESPN has called in the entire Favre/Tebow think tank for this one. Five years of programming has just been dropped in their lap

I would say that Brady's reliance on Welker has hurt his ability to build chemistry with new WRs.

You can point to Grink and Hernandez, but those guys are TEs and they bring a different kind of skill-set. Brady was forcing the ball to a covered Welker way too often.

Seems like he's trying to stir the pot here. Totally on the side of the players.

Hm, didn't realize Gasper had inside connections within the Brady camp. ...

I think in the end that BB deemed welker a little prick with some really annoying tendencies

I also think that when it comes to health, that welker and the way he plays was deemed a ticking timebomb he has been steadily getting hit more and more and harder, too.

beyond that, I think scheme wise, the pats felt they were getting everything out of him that they could, and turning 32 has to factor into the idea that the chances are very high that he will not be able to sustain what he's doing, and anything less was just not worth the money or the hassle.

the pats FO has had plenty of time to think about this and probably decided a long time ago that this moment was coming......

the made a definitive decision to move towards amendola before they exhausted negotiating means with welker.......there's more to this story when it comes to the pats FO regard for welker. and we likely won't ever know

Turn off ESPN, turn off NFLN, turn off the radio and don't read these 89 pound weakling media whores trying to exercise their personal vendettas against BB and the Pats. They are like rats scurrying after a few crumbs of food. I will not click on that link and my life will be better for it.

And maybe somebody in Brady's camp will put a name to it, until then it's all made up BS.

It would be nice if reporters actually reported facts other than those that have been circulated before. This article has no new facts, only speculation and gossip.

Gasper is a good guy and was a fine daily reporter.

However, since getting the "promotion" to columnist, his job description is obviously more market- eyeball - clicks oriented.

He knows better.

He knows the reasons why his list of guys who got long-term contracts for the money the past 9 months and who didn't is what it is.

Gronk-Hernando-Amendola are all 27 or under.

Gasper can list all the past accomplishments of Welker he wants, but the off-the-sportspage Christopher knows better.

We all have to make a living, and Gasper is just feeding his family.

What?
What does this have to do with the Gasper quote I posted?

Reading between the lines of what Gasper posted, the Brady camp sees the extension he signed with very team friendly terms as merely a device that allowed the team to free up cap space in the short term. If we are to believe that the Brady camp dismisses the Kraft "iron clad" notion of the extension, then what do you think is going through Brady's mind as they low balled WW right out the door.
And how about Bob Kraft and his Jerry Jonesian recent tendency to become part of the story. First his "iron clad" demonstration of "the Patriot Way" which we are now learning is BS.....then his Welker for Life comment out of one side of his mouth while insulting him out of the other side. And it is is now reported that Kraft spoke to WW at the end trying to convince the most successful WR of the last 6 years to accept 1/6 the amount of money Harvin was given and even less money than Hartline.
Care to guess what WW was actually thinking during that conversation/

Brady might be angry right now, but the deal he signed was a smart business decision for both him and the team. It made sense with or without Welker, and he's smart enough to realize that.

Besides, what is Brady going to do? Hold out in a couple years, when he's 38. Gimme a break, this quote means nothing. He signed an extension, he's locked in. All will be fine.

This may be one of the most ludicrous things I've seen posted here in quite some time.

By the way the NFL is set up, an owner must be involved in the operations of a team. At a minimum, the owner has to sign off on all contracts and trades. But Kraft isn't trying to act as GM the way that Jones literally does.

Great article. Really sums things up well.

You mean the scat back from Columbia lightweight football, Krafty Bob? The guy who timed Tebucky Jones with a stopwatch at his Pro Day at Syracuse?????

I'm practically apoplectic when people argue this.

The offense stalls totally when he's not hitting Welker.

Branch and Lloyd can't get open, Hernandez and Gronk don't play together because they're hurt.

Just who the hell do you want Brady to throw to if not Welker?

My god, this board has made Welker's reliability into a negative to be used against him!

If only we didn't have Welker, Brady could look for Branch or Lloyd more!!

Are you actually listening to yourself?

You forgot add that these guys always find a way are not tough enough to suck it up and play 16 games or 19 games and help there qb`s.

Ras-I dowling must be qacking in his boots , his spot in the hot tub to watch the game is under threat from another guy now.

Some people are going overboard one way and you are going overboard the other. The Pats actually did pretty well week 1 this year going away from Welker.

This offense will survive the loss of Welker. Will it be as good? Probably not. Will it still be a a top offense in the league. Most likely. Most likely, it won't be the best offense in the league this season, but it could be somewhere in 2-5. If the defense improves enough, that could be enough to win the Super Bowl. Maybe more so than with the top offense and weaker defense.

Huh? Why are you putting Gronk in this category? The guy never missed a game until this year including playing the Super Bowl barely being able to walk. I do have to conceed though that he was pansie arsed for not sucking it up and playing with a broken arm this year.

what the hell... one got a broken arm that happen twice in one season, the other got a high ankle sprain. There's tough and then there's crazy.

This entire situation is absurd.

There are many reasons why the Pats have not won a SB in 8 years. Some of the reasons are due to injuries, talent, roster turnover, bad luck, mistakes at critical junctures during games, etc.

One of the reason is that the opposing team scored more points than the offense did.

For that reason alone, I am pretty confident in saying that Brady is certainly disappointed that WW will not be part of the team next year and beyond.

I am also confident in saying that if the Patriots are up 17-13 in the Super Bowl and the defense stops the opposing team's 4th down attempt to score and Brady is taking a knee and receiving the Lombardi Trophy, he will wish that WW was with him, but also glad that he won his 4th Super Bowl and his contract allowed BB to add more talent to the defense that enabled the team to win.

Let's not forget nancyboy Amendola, who couldn't tough out that broken clavicle shard aimed directly at his aorta.
