My hope is Patriots sign one (or both).

But, which would improve Pats-D better?

For me, it would be Goldson, as we were very weak in the middle...

Goldson would command quite a bit but if the Pats are willing to shell out 5 mil for Ed Reed I would certainly take Goldson for 6/7. Would love to see a corner taken in the 1st round and Goldson playing safety next to McCourty. Probably a pipe dream at this point.

That's tough. It depends on who'd we'd rather have playing on the field.- Gregory/Wilson or Arrington.

That being said, overall I like Goldson's potential.

Belichick reportedly is okay with Tavon Wilson being a starter next season. I assume he doesn't feel the same way about Ras-I Dowling.

And I feel bad for the team that pays Goldson big money. It's going to be hard for him to be such an impact player without the aid of that ridiculous front 7.

At this point, why are we still even talking about Ras-I Dowling. I get gas just seeing his name.

That 49er secondary was dreadful throughout the playoffs. The only reason that team made it to the Super Bowl was Kaepernick putting the team on his back literally. Eased off on Goldson last season.

Because he's the #2 CB on the depth chart right now. It doesn't need to be Talib necessarily, but adding a CB is infinitely more important than adding a safety right now.

Whitner was absolutely terrible for most of the year. Talking to niners fans on other forums and they'll say they want him gone. They want an upgrade at Corner and they want Goldson resigned. They have plenty of cap space to do so .

take a look at what they have to say: http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners/162732-dashon-goldson/

I wouldn't say plenty - the Niners were over the cap until the Smith trade. Smith saves them $9 million, but that essentially makes room for Goldson. If they want to be real players in free agency, they will have to start cutting guys, including starters like Goodwin or Rogers.

I'm getting awfully sick of our new offseason champs, the Niners. Obviously, they are better than our previous offseason champs in the Jets, Bills or whatever other team we've gone into the year fearing, but I suspect much like those teams, they will still manage to disappoint.

I don't buy this for a second. That's from Bedard a day after he came here and told us that he didn't have info on the situation. BB watched the same Wilson everyone else did last year. That kid wasn't anywhere near ready.

He also clearly said he was trying to figure that out. I don't see the need to skeptical.

Even with Gregory & McCourty, we were mostly hurt in the middle of the field. Maybe we need better LB's? Or, just a better Safety?

:confused2:

Well, I do, both for the timing and for the actual claim. As I said, BB saw the same Wilson everyone else did last year, and that kid wasn't close to ready.

Gregory is not a starting caliber safety, and 2013 should be his last year with the Patriots (If it weren't for cap reasons, I'd say they'd be well served to cut him now). This team needs to bring in another safety. If they're not going to pay for a William Moore or other top guy, they need to draft one in round 1.

Wilson playing better to shadow the tight end and a cover LB would certainly help.

They better save some of that money. They will be in cap hell before they know it. Kaepernick and A Smith for starters.

I'm sure no one here is shocked that you think you have a better insight on how well Wilson is progressing than Bedard or BB.

As to the OP - I'd pick Talib over Goldson simply because if your goal is to improve the secondary, this might be the deepest draft for safeties in a decade, while the CB talent is a lot thinner. The opposite is true in FA, where the safety market is relatively thinner than the CB market.. So it makes sense to get your safety improvement from the draft and any CB improvements from FA

Another reason for skepticism:

A look at snaps played by Patriots defenders in the team’s win over the Texans

S Tavon Wilson – 16 of 78

Snaps played by Patriots defenders in the team’s 28-13 AFC Championship Game loss to the Ravens.....

Is it possible that the kid is ready? Anything's possible, but he certainly didn't show it.
is it possible that the team thinks the kid is ready? Again, it's possible, but his playing time says no.

Just spend all of our cap $$ on the DBs please...and give some to welker and woodhead

I think Goldson is overrated and would end up being a disappointment, but Talib is a huge risk too.
Franlky we need 2 starting DBs, unless Wilson makes big strides from year 1 to year 2, which is not unthinkable.
I say get a corner and a safety.
I would say 'both' based on your question, and the assumed quality of the players, but I'm not a huge fan of either player.
