Regardless of whether or not the Patriots return to a base 34 next year, they spend enough time in sub formations that a legitimate, starting-caliber 43 WLB could see a lot of playing time. I have watched dozens and dozens of college games this year, and I've narrowed down my list to find my favorite player.

I'll kick off the discussion with Danny Trevathan, and then profile a few other players over the next couple weeks. I hope you'll all join in the discussion.

When I watch linebackers, I look for 1) instincts, 2) gap discipline, 3) ability to play against the run, pass, and kicking game, 4) tackling dependability, and 5) movement skills.

Danny Trevathan meets each of these criteria exceptionally well. He always flows to the ball on every single play, often before the snap. Despite his smallish stature (6' 230), he usually does a good job with run fits (occasionally he gets engulfed by guards and sheds a little late, but he sticks to his responsibilities). Trevathan has the "fluid hips" scouts always prattle on about, which allows him to comfortably stick with running backs and tight ends in zone or man coverage. He tackles with authority, and even when he doesn't deliver a big hit, he puts his man on the ground. Overall, he plays fast in all directions, and constantly provides a spark for the defense.

On the year, he has 135 tackles, four forced fumbles, four interceptions, and three sacks. He makes big plays as well as the consistent, routine plays, and this against quality SEC opponents. For his career he has close to 400 tackles. Although he's small, he plays very physically, and has proven a durable, consistent performer.

CBSSports projects him as a 6th rounder, but I would take him anytime from the 2nd onward. For this defense, his value may be closer to a 4th or 5th, but I really believe in him as a player. Speed, smarts, toughness. Sounds like a Patriot to me.

Don't know a thing about him but 6'0 is pretty short. I do know the Patriots could have used a faster, smaller LB for about the past 5 years, someone who could cover a TE and play a zone and occasional blitzes. Maybe this is the year.

So basically, we're talking about replacements for Guyton, especially in subpackages?

That's the way I look at it. If we stick with the 4-3, we have a WOLB in Mayo. Ninko is our Sam. Spikes is the mike man. Need speed backing them up. Fletcher looks like a player. I also like Levonte David - Nebraska, Bradham - Florida St. Maybe as early as the 3rd. Want speedy backups because Mayo is our backup MLB. Can slide him there if Spikes is hurt and have some good depth. If we're looking at a starting olb, Zach Brown - UNC will be a first rounder. Looks like a player. But, all of those UNC guys get too much hype. Don't see the production.

I agree with that. A lot of attention gets paid to Coples and Moss and the OLB's roam free for the most part. All they have to do is run to the ball. If you watch Brown tape, you hardly ever see him have to defeat a blocker to get to a ball carrier.

Greetings,
I think Vinny Curry could play 4-3 OLB and 3-4 OLB, kind of like the Von Miller conversion this season.

I saw him against RU. He didn't have trouble beating blockers at all. The guy is always around the ball and is probably the most athletic linebacker to come out since Willis. (maybe even faster) He's great in pass coverage and is a good blitzer. Solid prospect and if he can develop some pass rushing moves...watch out. He needs to improve upon breaking down and making the tackle though. I saw a good amount of arm tackles. Manti Teo is another linebacker I like for the Pats if were talking about 4-3 hybrid.

Nope. Von was a lighter 240 lb LB. Curry is big. He is either a 43DE or a 34 OLB.

Didn't Von run about a 4.5 too? Vinny will probably clock in 4.7-4.8. His strength is his motor more than just his natural athletic ability. Which is ok. Just not off of the charts like Von Miller.

There is way too much 34 trait conversation going on in a 43 prospect discussion. The potential continuation of the shifted 43 is going to be the coolest thing to happen to this forum in a long time. We're gonna get to see who knows football this late winter!!

Greetings,
Just curious, what position do you see him playing in the NFL?

43 DE or 34OLB.

The reason Von could do it was b/c he is a lighter 235-240 lbs. Curry looks like he weighs 250-260lbs.

Gruden (or Jaws) just spoke about the importance of drafting Linebackers with speed sand size to be able to cover these big athletic TE's. Burfict is probably the best linebacker available when it comes to that.

He is an out of control character. Got 3 unsportsmanlike conduct in one drive. The ASU staff benched him.

How recently? I heard he toned it down it bit and the last time I saw him play was against Oregon. He Suh like as a linebacker and thats good and bad especially because of his propensity to extend drives for the opposing offense.

Yeah, this 4-3 thing is starting to grow on me, and it's so fun to try to fit prospects to positions. Of course, having to actually pay attention to DTs under 6'4" and DEs that can't play standing up is just more work

And I just can't seem to find a good fit for Ninkovich's SOLB spot. It's such a weird position in that it asks players to set the edge against the run, but also drop into coverage, plus jam TEs. There just aren't many guys that are 250+ pounds but can drop into coverage effectively. Have my eye on the Bama duo of Hightower and Upshaw and Teo from ND, but I think they all kinda have the dropping into coverage question mark. I very much dislike Burfict.

There is a lot of Youtube footage on Devin Taylor of SC showing him setting the edge and rushing the passer and dropping into coverage.

Yeah, he looked great against Arkansas. After watching New Orleans last night and GB a couple of times. I think your base defense has to be a hybrid of the 3-4 and 4-3. You want two big dt's to help out vs the run. Three 5 technique guys are too many. One of the DL has to be able to get after the qb from the edge. More of your 4-3 de. I'd like my other end to be able to do both. Rush the passer and drop into coverage. Maybe, a Willie McGinest prototype. I think Vinny Curry might be able to do it and help/spell/replace/upgrade Ninko. I think Devin Taylor will eventually grow into that pro-typical 4-3 end after putting some weight on. Right now I want that flexible guy to play LDE and a three down lb to team with Mayo. Vinny Curry and Luke Kuechly would be fantastic. Nice to have a guy like Brandon Spikes around for when you do play a team with a power running game. Can't wait to see if Spikes clocks Tebow a couple of times or not.

I highly doubt that Curry will be available in the second round when the pats make their pick.I would take in the first round.I think he can play DE in a 4-3 defense.Just add a couple of more pounds.
