According to Bedard, the Patriots are refusing a contract like this.

Bedard just said that Gonzalez should not expect a Stingley type deal.

Stingley got $60m guaranteed over 4 years, for a total of $90m (3 yrs ago).

If Bedard is right, Gonzalez will either accept half of what Witherspoon got guaranteed or else he will be traded.

Your conclusion of what Bedard said is not correct. He was talking about the structure of the deal. He did say they would not do the Stingley deal but the Witherspoon deal is a deal that the Patriots would and should do. The difference is the fifth year which the Texans never picked up prior to extending Stingley. His new extension kicked in for the fifth year. That is not the case for Witherspoon as his extension adds four years to his contract beginning after the fifth year. Pats would be fine with this contract structure not sure Gonzalez will be but since his agent represents Witherspoon he should be. I think they reach agreement in the next two weeks. Witherspoon does receive a signing bonus of 26 million now and a 24 million option bonus in 2027. But the 4 years do not start until 2028.
