Hate to Sound New Agey of Aquariusy, but I like this kid's energy and aura:

He’s definitely got that southern charm/charisma. I at least find him more believable as a locker room leader than MJ, but I think he’ll need to show he’s got the competitiveness a la TB to go along with the charisma.

Amazingly it seems he got a high ankle sprain in Pitt game, did not scream and cry and need to be helped down the stairs....
instead played and played and 4 weeks later before Virginia game "in practice, he could hardly walk". Nobody outside team even knew he was hurt.
Got tackled around ankles in 4th quarter of NC State game and stayed in that game as well despite tweaking it.
Dude played basically whole year with injured ankle and refused to sit.

Maye had 36 plays of 3rd and 11+ almost as many as Daniels at 3rd and 7+. Yes, means they had poor success on 1st and 2nd down but they had a ton of penalties on the line on 1st and 2nd down, he was put into obvious passing situations way more than the other QB's and still put up #'s.

Fun fact both Maye and Baker left Alabama for their respective schools. They know and worked out together at Bama before they both Transferred.

I appreciated his press conference after the season ending loss to NC State. He had a not good game (with some unlucky noncatches leading to INTs). Could tell that he was pissed but held it as well as a just turned 21 year old could.

Patriots did their homework on Maye before taking him. Here's a report detailing the process that went into the decision to pick Maye 3rd overall.

What encourages me about this decision is that the Pats entire brain trust was on this trip and got eyes on Maye personally.

"Perhaps the most important part of that process came late in March, when nine members of the Patriots organization spent nearly 24 hours in North Carolina as Maye was set to hold his Pro Day on March 28. That group included Mayo, director of scouting Eliot Wolf, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, senior assistant Ben McAdoo, senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith, director of player personnel Matt Groh, senior personnel advisor Patrick Stewart and national scout Matt Evans."

Wolf even put together a lowlights package of Maye's bad plays and the kid held himself accountable and never threw a teammate under the bus. That says something about his character.

“A lot of teams, they put up all the good plays of players. Eliot and his group, they put a tape together that had a lot of bad plays, and honestly he took a lot of that blame on himself even when sometimes it wasn’t his fault. A very accountable man,” Mayo explained.

The Patriots brass knew about Maye's weaknesses but felt he could work on them and came away impressed with his strengths and his makeup.

“At the end of the day, we felt comfortable with those things and really betting on the talent and the kid,” Wolf said. “Drake is a relentless worker from all the indications that we have, and he’s going to be able to overcome some of the things in the areas that he needs to improve.”

Before making a potentially franchise-altering decision you need to make a thorough investigation on the draft prospect. From the sounds of it they did just that. All of the top decision makers got a chance to talk to Drake Maye, get a look at him, and evaluate him before coming together and deciding, this is "the guy" we're taking at #3.

One leftover on Maye from an interview with North Carolina head coach Mack Brown: "I asked him what he wanted [after the 2022 season] and he said 'somebody to help me with my footwork, somebody to help me have a better presence in the pocket, somebody to help me with my throwing motion.' So he's all over it.

"In fact, you have to be careful; he is so hard on himself that some of these things don't need near as much as work as he thinks they do. He's going to be more critical of himself than anybody else."

Maybe it’s me, but I feel like there was way more discussion about our new QB when Mac was drafted, as opposed to our current rookie QB. Only 18 pages?…This kid is much more talented than Mac…idk..just feels like the reactions/analysis/discussions have been pretty underwhelming for having just drafted a potential franchise changing player.

Once bitten, twice shy maybe?

Yeah, he certainly has more talent than Mac did, but we know the failure rates of these QBs and have seen first hand within our own division how long it’s taken and how many first round picks it’s taken before they hit their guy - and the Jets still haven’t done so, they just rented an end of the line Packer HOF again. I’m happy with the pick and see all the reasons to be optimistic, but I’m waiting to see him on the field and how he responds to adversity before I get too excited.

I believe it's due to how the whole situation with Mac went. Maybe it's people being cautiously optimistic.. ? I agree he's much more talented and it's just something about maye that feels like he's going to end up being the " guy"..

Mac was following Brady, that is a tough gig.

Maye is in a better spot to start with.
