2022 PTP Draft Board / Pats Draft Talk

So many draft pundits have us taking a guard at 21. I will be really pissed if that happens, I doubt it will. At 21 no matter how the draft goes there will be an impact player for us .... who is not OL

He wasn’t that cheap. He’ll be a rotational guy.

Two years $6M is pretty cheap. The announcement was two years $9M but it is "More realistically, he will end up short of that number which is why the pact is in fact a two-year, $6 million deal." Here is 2022, less than $2.5M and 2023 is less than $3.5M, and both are dependent on Incentives that will most likely never be achieved 100%, so I think that is "pretty cheap" or at least, "about as cheap as you can expect in today's NFL".

2022

  • Base salary: $1.04 million (fully guaranteed)
  • Signing bonus proration: $800,000
  • Offseason workout bonus: $100,000
  • Per-game roster bonus: $510,000
  • Incentives: $1.5 million
  • Salary cap number: $2.42 million

It's our biggest need along with Cb, but they don't realize that since BB has been here, the only time we have selected a Guard in round 1 was Mankins and he played Tackle in college. The odds of us taking one in round 1 imo are very slim. I think there is better value at other positions.

Mankins was pick #32, so Round 1 but barely. The Pats might trade down for Zion (guard) or pick Penning (tackle) at 21. Either way I agree we should go CB or DL, but Zion is as close to a "cant miss" as anyone, and with a trade down we get an extra pick. Zion Johnson was "2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl Practice Player of the Week".

The guard in question, Zion Johnson, is likely to be a Perennial All-Pro at Guard or Center. I don't think it's a stretch to think that the Pats could take him.. Even if they don't trade down..

I question if he will even be there at 21. Maybe he will but all it takes is for one team to really fall in love with him. Like a team like the Chargers, G is definitely a need for them. Or maybe someone like the Bucs sends a load of picks to the Eagles or Saints to jump up to 17 or 18, I know LG is a need for them.

Just curious, what has he put on take that makes anyone think he could be all pro material?

He may not be there at 21. As for the Bucs, I highly doubt they're trading what draft capital they have to get Johnson. The Saints are likely trading UP from where they are at so they can get a QB.

Stinnie took snaps for the Bucs in 2020 at LG. He also took snaps there in 2021. Not a ton, but he did. The Bucs also have Sadarius Hutcherson who is coming of IR from an ACL whom they gave a decent UDFA deal (3yr/2.45M) last year. They also have Nick Leverett. So, while it's a "need" I don't know that's it's a "top priority" for them.

If Zion is going to be a pro bowler in Bill’s eyes, it’s a no brainer

They have a few glaring holes on the roster. WR, DL, CB, G, Have a LT and center who are on the last year of their deals so yeah, I wouldnt be surprised in the least if they took oline at 21 or traded down to get one. Just make sure its a good player and we’ll worry about the rest later.

Given salary structures in the NFL, if you're not using your premium pick on QB, LT, WR, CB or DL & perhaps transcendent talents at LB, you're doing it wrong. It takes a transcendent talent to move away from this formula. Saquon Barkley was by far the best RB talent in a generation, but anyone taking a RB that high is wasting it. Same with most OL positions. People talk about Linderbaum as though he's one of the best college centers ever. He's somehow gone from a top 5 pick to top 10 to top 20 to first round and now many mocks have out of the first round completely. Must have something to do with all the bad football games he's played between January and April.

Big thanks to everyone contributing here . a long read but feels like back on track..

@BaconGrundleCandy - unbelievable effort once again that makes this board worth visiting.
Should be rewarded @Ian..
Appreciate been a busy week with work and other stuff. Going to B's game then putting out grades and another thread.

Speaking of grades. I may be misremembering, but as you’ve been updating the PTP board, there’s been quite a few removals of 1st rd grades. Right? There’s only 11 now. I thought there were more. If your board is close, this is one lean draft. Everything is in that 2nd to 4th rd sweet spot. I’m beating a dead horse here, but would looove for Bill to find some way to really stockpile some picks in that range. Besides trade downs, not sure how else he would get there. We might be in for some serious reaches and trade outs for next year by the time it’s all said and done. Gonna be fun to watch for surprises, that’s for damn sure.

Mason will be “replaced“ by #182 (6rd) pick Onwenu saving some 15M in cap space over next 2y.

Hope that makes your Saturday a bit brighter.

Onwenu played LG last year. My point is still correct. Maybe Onwenu is better on the right side but they could have kept Mason and started Onenu on the other side instead of potentially using a #1 to replace Mason (with Onwenu changing sides).

I don't think it will happen, Mankins was #32 not #21 and when the team had far fewer holes. But it would be disgusting if it happened.

He is.

And I don't really object to the Mason trade on its face - we need the draft pick this year as well as the cap space - but I wish it had been done a year earlier like I wanted so we could've kept Thuney out of the ****ing Queefs' hands.

Groh’s comments this week reinforce this observation. I think you’ve got the positions exactly right.
