2022 Patriots Roster Cut Down Day Thread

Is that the problem? Are you sure the problem is not that a bunch of homers look at a stretch of games last year, where the Patriots lucked into a combination of an schedule stretch, games against good teams that were devastated by injuries, and a (not-literal) monsoon, and rode that ridiculously good fortune to a better-than-deserved record and a playoff game, where they were ***** slapped up and down the field for 4 quarters, and just overrate last season?

Because that also fits into the facts of the "problem"...
Thanks for identifying as the real problem.

Geez. Just toddle back to your precious Bucs ghetto lest the dreaded "Patriots homers" again stirreth your ire, O Lord of Wrath.

There is always a lot of moves in the week after the "cutdown to 53 day". That is normal and usual. What kind of "not normal and usual" moves are you expecting? A couple of guys go on temporary IR, and then we add OL and TE depth. We have 4 WRs and when Thornton and Montgomery are back, and it is up to 6 WRs. Humphrey or Nixon are on the PS makes it 7 WRs - that seems OK to me. Seems quite straight forward ....................
Excuse me, please don’t express your disagreement. I am exercising my right to an opinion, you’re not entitled to an opinion about my opinion.

Love that Hines made the team...great potential!!! Wish that Ray would have snuck on. Also glad to see Wade there.
Agree. I could see him starting at some point this year. Seemed to be hitting his stride late in camp. Needs to keep his weight down.

Pretty cool photo of him next to Strange (who didn’t play center in college but worked there during senior bowl week, at the request of teams).

He's good but would you place the franchise tag on him? He's shown promise but unproven... He's good at the rush but needs to prove himself in the run game... No team would trade multiple first rounders for him... That's elite talent
What are you talking about? Guy was a VERY GOOD D, he actually needed double teams later in the year.
You're an idiot.

I'm glad Wade made it, but boy we're pretty thin with experienced CB's. Mills, Jones... Bryant a bit, and then essentially rookies Wade, Jones & Jones.
I’m fine with taking a risk on talented kids. None of the vet CBs whom they cut were going to be difference makers this year.

Hines is a C/G, correct? I seem to remember seeing that he played some Center coming out of college.

Yes, played some center and both OG spots…

I love Andrews’ toughness and intelligence but I would also love someone with the size and strength of Hines, who can match the physicality of some of the mammoth IDLs.

Established players who are worthy of a first rounder by trade. They've traded most of their players for 3rd or less. Barmore is their best prospect but simmer down. Let's see how he does. You think this is a good roster? What player can dominate in one on ones? The Mac Jones draft gave me hope and then they followed it up with a guard. And pipe down with "don't watch them then". You sound like a homer
You sound like a fool that hasn't been paying attention AT ALL.
Move along JETE FAN.

Maybe we should give it one or two more days before burying them? There is a practice squad and Asiasi is a hard working, honest, athletic guy who can in-line block at a minimum. A bit awkward catching passes I agree.
Fair enough, now go take on these folks:

After the Brady years, its been a bigger adjustment than I thought it would be.
I think most on this board would agree that there is a lack of high end talent on the roster. BB needs to take accountability for the lack of elite talent.
A quick lesson on simple math and probability:
* There are 32 NFL teams, 16 in each conference
* Every year, each team has 1/16 chance of appearing in a Super Bowl (SB) and 1/32 chance of winning it
* Thus, in the 18 years from 2002-2019, each team would on the average would be expected to have appeared in 18/16 (1.1) SB and win 18/32 (.56) of them.
* During that time, NE appeared in 11 SB (10 times what would be expected on average) and won 6 of them (11 times expected).
* Not appearing in a SB for 2 years does not suddenly mean that BB needs to be held accountable for a terrible failure. It means that we have gone from a 18 year unprecedented record of excellence for any sport to a couple of years of being more normal.
* Given that in 2 years we seem to already have a viable starting QB (and how long teams like the Jets have been struggling to get one), how about a bit of patience?

It's kinda unusual for a football concussion to go this long unless it's REALLY serious. I don't think they'd have IRed him if they thought he'd be back within a couple more weeks. As it is, even if they give him an injury settlement at the end of the week, that means he can't re-sign with them until after week 4. Which is 6 weeks away.
I think they just intended to cut him but couldn't because he was in the concussion protocol, so they IRed him.

In related news, I was happy to see this: Panthers cut Kenny Robinson, who delivered hit that concussed Kristian Wilkerson

They drafted a guard, a position which is currently among the thinnest depth on the team. We can't complain about Ferentz hanging around forever and then kvetch when the team finally does something to upgrade the position. Guards don't flash often, but they are useful for a young would-be franchise QB.

Team seems thin at interior OL and DE. Given how the zone blocking experiment has gone, picking up some castoff linemen with applicable experience is probably a good bet, although I expect Ferentz to be on the PS within a day or two. Would have liked to see Trey Flowers signed, but after two years on IR (and maybe too many years with MattP), that was never a likely event.

The odd thing is the number of healthy defensive players on the roster. Things will change with IR designations, but those are all on the offensive side of the ball, so if nothing else were to change (and with two weeks to practice, they sure will) the inactives, aside from Zappe and one tackle, would have to be on defense. 2QB, 1C, 3G, 3T, 3RB, 2TE, and 4WR, excluding Slater. Maybe Montgomery gets healthy, but that's still only 19 game day offensive players, which is extremely light. I think we can expect an additional TE and interior OL to be signed and/or promoted from the PS by opening day. I believe that means that there will be at least two cuts (or injuries) on the defensive side of the roster in the near future. The only position there that doesn't look overstocked is Edge, where Judon, Jennings, and Wise are the only 3-down players.

Zero elite talent
What does this even mean? Brady had won two superbowls by the time he had developed elite talent. There are lots of NFL players with elite talent that never develop as players, because they lack elite awareness or work ethic or a coach who puts them in a position to succeed. Sure, the Pat's may lack established All Pro players in their prime, but there are some great young players, some top established players that any team would want, and some elite talent in development. Judon is an elite player. The S position is the best in the league. The RB group is right up there. The TEs were underutilized and Smith underperformed last year but are elite talent. Barmore and Thornton have elite talent and are developing. Mac Jones lacks elite talent, but he's working in it, and he is as good a QB at BB could hope for after Brady. The CB group makes me a little nervous, and the OL positively frightens me that all our elite talent will go to waste in a morass of broken plays, but if Devante Adams and Aaron Donald walked in the door, their elite everything wouldn't solve our problems.
