Sure $7M a year would be a good (great) deal for the patriots. But why should McCourty sign for what would be the 8th AAV for a safety, especially considering that some of these comparables are a couple of years old. Why would McCourty simply wait?

As we know, the team could franchise him for a couple of years. Maybe McCourty would cooperate and show up for all camps. Maybe he would just show up at the last minute.

IMHO, if the team want to extend McCourty, they will need to pay more than $7M.
 
I said in the post that a "McCourty extension in the $7 to $8 million per year average range would be fair for both sides"

Used 7M as an example since it was the lowest number.
