2014 Draft Prospect Thread

Manziel looks phenomenal. People say he does whatever he wants off the field. He also does whatever he wants on the field. Incredible athlete, impossible to sack, more accurate with throws on the run or even off of one foot than any quarterback I've ever seen.

I know this has almost no chance of happening, but . . . WANT.

Last Oklahoma game on the docket, probably the last OU game I'll watch this offseason: vs TCU. Definitely will let you guys know what I think of Jason Verrett

Jason Verrett looks phenomenal. He doesn't have elite measurables, but he has the film of a top 5 prospect. If he's always this good, he's Brandon Flowers

Jason Verrett is a top 10 pick. Amazing on film. The next Ronde Barber

Watching Stanford Oregon. Kevin Hogan and Marcus Mariota are very good prospects. Ifo Ekpre Olomu and Taylor Hart have not impressed me at all. David Yankey looks okay. Ben Gardner, Trent Murphy, and Henry Anderson have all looked solid.

Also, I'd be stunned if A.J. Tarpley entered the draft, but he's a really good player all the same

Any impressions of Terrance Mitchell of Oregon?

I'd be quite surprised if he entered the draft. If he does, he'll be a day 3 pick. But he has some potential, probably will improve to 3rd round with practice

David Yankey of Stanford is interesting, and I can't help but feel that the worst case scenario for him is that he is a versatile, backup lineman who can be subbed in and play competently at any offensive line position except for center in the case of an injury to any starter. On the other hand, the more I've seen Trent Murphy, the less impressed I have been with him.

A.J. Tarpley almost certainly will not enter the draft, but, if he did, I'd give him a long, hard look in the second round. Henry Anderson looks like your prototypical 2 gap 3-4 defensive end at the NFL level. Long arms, makes tackles in traffic, solid range, can see through blocks, every thing that your 3-4 end is supposed to be good at he can do. A bit like Jason Hatcher.

Anderson has awesome strength. Made this great play, he literally grabbed Kenjon Barner's jersey while he was on the ground, and simply laid there. Barner tried to escape but Anderson was just too big. It was like Barner was a boat and Anderson was an anchor.

I've read some other places that Mitchell is really very good, just doesn't get the recognition that IEO gets because nobody throws his way. Just curious as to what you thought about that. I haven't looked at either one yet.

Although that is partially true, passes near him tend to have a high success rate. He may only be targeted 6 times a game or so, which is pretty good, but the quarterback's numbers targeting him could be 5/6 for 60 yards. He doesn't have great ball skills, so, even if he does a pretty good job of staying with his man, his efficiency is pretty average.

IMO, IEO is not very good. Excellent tackler with decent ball skills but weak in man coverage for a first round corner.

Thanks. The folks I wouldn't who follow Oregon closely all say he's better than Ekpre Olumu, which doesn't surprise me, as pre-draft year most "cornerback rankings" are just interception totals. Interesting to hear your take.

I agree with you about Trent Murphy by the way. He looks the part but he doesn't fire off the LOS the way you want a pass rushing end to do so. He's more of a strider athletically who builds up to speed off the ball. Not what I want in a pass rushing end. It'll be interesting to see how he develops for his senior year (gets bigger, faster, better off the line) as I'm not sure what role the NFL will want him the most in right now.

Mitchell could be good, but I need to see him play better with the ball in the air. There was one play against Stanford that summed up his weaknesses. A long, ill advised pass to the end zone intended for Ertz. Triple coverage, but Ertz nearly made the play. Mitchell was well short of where the ball was going at the time of the release. The logical thing to do in that situation is, well, sprint to the football. Mitchell backpedaled and awkwardly jumped off one foot to try to tip the pass. He might have tipped it, I couldn't tell. But had he turned his back and sprinted, like a receiver would catching a deep ball, he had an excellent shot at an interception. Receivers don't backpedal making a catch on a fade route for a reason. So he may do an excellent job of staying with his man, but his poor instincts with the ball in the air result in a high completion percentage when he is targeted.

Just remember Ekpre Olomu is overrated. Based on the Stanford film, he's there for interception stats. Based on that film, he's a 3rd/4th rounder. I've got Mitchell in that area too.

As a whole, this looks like a very strong draft class. Also, Stanford has a shot at the National Championship. They have the only defense I've ever seen that could shut down Alabama's two headed running back monster of T.J. Yeldon and (insert name of freshman running back here). Henry Anderson is the best run stopping defensive end I've seen in a while. Ben Gardner is pretty good too. A.J. Tarpley is phenomenal, and Shayne Skov may regain some of the speed he lost after his ACL surgery. He did look rusty at times last year, but still a solid player.

*excluding all of Alabama's defenses over the last few years

Watching Stanford Notre Dame. Zack Martin looks pretty overrated. Jordan Richards looks pretty good. Against 3 receiver formations, they put him in man coverage in the slot and he hasn't been beaten yet, so definitely a better athlete than his 4.59 40 suggests. I also remember him staying stride for stride with Josh Huff in overtime in the Oregon game.
