How would you rank the free agent signings through the first half of the season?

This is what I have:

1. Talib
2. Edelman
3. Kelly
4. Arrington
5. Blount (trade/restructured)
6. Amendola
7. Cole
8. Svitek
9. Washington

In season signings: White, Collie, Mulligan, Carter

Not on roster: Wilson, D. Jones, Hawkins, Jenkins, Bernard

TBD: Armstead

Vollmer, on IR and forgotten?

It is interesting to note that the free agent signings that got the most attention during the off-season (Tim Tebow, Adrian Wilson, Michael Jenkins, Donald Jones, Leon Washington) have had zero impact - though I think some of that is due to the lack of news during a seemingly everlasting time between the end of one season and the commencement of the following year's training camp.

Although we collectively should know better from past experience, the signing of a veteran free agent does not necessarily mean that the team is counting on him to have a crucial role on the team the following year; in reality it's just a tryout. Previous examples would include Torry Holt, Joseph Addai, Anthony Gonzalez, John Lynch, as well as vets the team traded for (Albert Haynesworth, Greg Lewis, Alex Smith)

One addition to your list: Sebastian Vollmer

Also, the rookie undrafted free agents:
Kenbrell Thompkins
Chris Jones
Ryan Allen

If Blount is included as a trade/restructure, then Hoomanawanui should as well; he was a RFA, and then restructured his contract September 1.

If we are strictly basing this on the first half of the season than I suppose I would rank them as follows:

  1. Aqib Talib
  2. Sebastian Vollmer
  3. Julian Edelman
  4. Kyle Arrington
  5. Chris Jones
  6. Kenbrell Thompkins
  7. Ryan Allen
  8. Michael Hoomanawanui
  9. Austin Collie
  10. Danny Amendola

I agree with your list, but not your characterization of which free agents "got the most attention".

I take a bit different view. To me the offseason was primarily consumed by our re-signing or replacements of the big 5: Welker, Vollmer, Woodhead, Talib, and Arrington. These 5 got the most attention. So, for me, the 5 that got the most attention were Amendola, Vollmer, Washingotn, Talib, and Arrington.

Sure, we spent a lot of time of the replacement of Branch and Lloyd. There were many, many candidates. The survivors are still on the team: THompkins, Dobson and Boyce.

I left out Vollmer and Hooman in error.

Wasn't Chris Jones awarded on a waiver claim?

The reason for the phrase "got the most attention" was in regards to which players garnered the most public discussion, not who the team prioritized in free agency. In my opinions fans (and the media) didn't really talk about players like Vollmer, Talib and Arrington nearly as much as they did with players like Jenkins, Jones and Wilson (or in previous years, players like Addai or Holt) probably in part because they had already been on the team, and possibly in part because there is an unbalanced amount of attention given to so-called skill players; perhaps that's part of the residual effect of fantasy football.

Chris Jones was indeed a waiver claim; I guess I included him because I was thinking about undrafted rookie free agents. It was actually the second time that the Pats put a claim in for him; when Houston originally waived him the Pats put in a claim but he was awarded to Tampa Bay, who had a higher waiver priority.
