We’ve done a fantastic job in the offseason over the past 2 seasons in terms of drafting, undrafted free agent signing, resigning our own free agents and trade acquisitions. That is the great news; the bad news is our unrestricted free agents acquisitions have been our Achilles heel during that period.

The wide receiver signings have been especially problematic, there have been 9 veteran acquisitions – Brandon Lloyd, Danny Amendola, Donald Jones, Greg Salas, Jabar Gaffney, Donte Stallworth, Anthony Gonzalez, Michael Jenkins and Lavelle Hawkins. Lloyd was the most successful but only lasted 1 season and failed to meet the expectations and was also rumored to be a problem in the locker room, Amendola was the second most successful but he entered camp as the #1 receiver and was #4 by the end of the season and failed to meet the expectations of him due to injuries and inconsistent play.
In the early and mid-2000s Belichick was extremely successful signing veterans who either underperformed elsewhere or who were on their last leg as a player that approach does not seem to be working out anymore, in unrestricted free agency anyway. I am not sure what the answer is but I do believe we need to change our approach to unrestricted free agency this year because these signings are beginning to take a toll on the salary cap and our overall depth because when we cut these players we’re forced to rely heavily on undrafted free agents to fill the void and that may work during the regular season but we all know that most rookie hit a wall at some point.
