2011 Patriots

Ah yes, that time when a 13-3 team lost to a 9-7 team. Too many key plays blown, a bunch of small things that added up to a 4 point loss. it was a competitive game but that team did not have that championship DNA.

Secondary was awful in 11. Vince Wilfork basically dragged that team to the SB. Watch a replay of the afcg sometime. Either he collapsed the pocket or flacco hits a 15-20 yard pass. Vince was a freaking monster that post season.

That was, by far and away, the finest game of his career.

The 2011 Patriots were an interesting story. They made the SB despite having a last ranked Defense ( Didn't make sense with Arrington, Sterling Moore, Love, Wilfork on the team). Brany had a good season, we also had the dual threat of Gronk and Hernandez.

Guess my question is what we're your expectations heading into that season? Were you bitterly disappointed such a great team could lose?
they barely lost in the Super Bowl, and the year before they were 14-2 and choked against the Jets. Brady through for 5200 yards 39 TD only 12 picks. The 2011 Pats were awesome.

Our offense was awesome that year. Welker had statistically his best year, Gronk and Hernandez, gave us a 2 headed monster at TE.

Defense was another story. We were playing Edelman at DB at times. I go into every season expecting the Pats to win a SB, but looking back at that year. That defense was terrible.
if you watch Gronk's gatest hits on Youtube a ton of them were from that year. (The "MHK" on the unis) Their offense was historic in 2011, and that should have won the Super Bowl.

Yes, that team with a healthy Gronk would have won.

Say what you will about the Defense but once again, when they had to make a play (in the Super Bowl) they did not.
not really. This is a poor analysis at least of that game. Defense did it's job. Only 12 points that were scored against them when they were trying on D.

The team had no business being a few minutes away from a championship. Still, considering the road (the likes of Tyler Palko and Tim Tebow at QB, and even the AFCCG and SB were teams with lower tiered QBs) it was a missed opportunity.

I'm probably the only one who feels this way, but I feel worse about the 2011 SB than I do about the 2007. At least in 2007, the Giants d-line completely dominated that game. I guess in 2011 their offense controlled the clock and the punter kept ****ing pinning them at like the 3 yard line. But man, talk about a mediocre champion.

The fact that the 49ers knocked out the Saints saved the bacon of both the Pats and Giants. The Saints could have scored 70 on either of them.

2011 team significantly better than the 2001 team.

Brady was very good. Their defense was a flaming hot dumpster fire.

That is true for Brady. Not so much for the rest of the team.

Pats had a Greatest Show on Turf type offense and a good enough Defence to go 13-3 and almost win the Super Bowl. 2011 was a better team that 2001

If they played a team with a good offense in the SB they would have gotten waxed.
The defense was garbage.

Dude, everybody knew when the Giants got the ball back with a little under 4 minutes, they were going to score and win the game. And they did. Sure, it was contested but they had the opportunity to save the game and they could not do it.

Yep.

And I'd bet money THIS team wouldn't let them score.

Yes. Bitterly disappointed. I spoke with someone who was there, and you could hear a pin drop in Lucas Oil Stadium during TV timeouts.

In recent years, Super Bowl winners ('06 Colts, '12 Ravens, '15 Broncos) have been horribly flawed and imperfect, a departure from the early modern era. The Patriots 100% were the best team in the AFC, totally deserved to be there, and if Welker hangs on, or if Gronk dives for and catches the Hail Mary, they were worthy.

The popular dismissal of that team is, typically, stupid, ignorant, and delusional. And no, I'm not sorry..

They also beat zero good teams that year until the AFC Championship game and if Cundiff didn't shank the game tying kick they probably wouldn't have beaten them either.

Brady actually led him out of collision on purpose on that one
Just went and rewatched it (holy crap that was painful) the safety was coming but was still at least 5 yards away. Brady could have put it on his right shoulder instead of his left avoiding the whole twisting part adding to the degree of difficulty. I still think Brady missed due to his reaction, you know the hands on the head oh **** I want that one back. Brady only does that when the ball doesn't go exactly where he wants when the receiver runs the wrong route he gets in their face. All that said....Wes got his hands on it and SHOULD have caught it, game over and Brady is going for ring #6 this weekend.

The defense was garbage.

It's amazing how the attitude towards certain units and teams changes over the years. Back then, a significant portion of the board was doing absolute mental gymnastics in order to convince themselves (and everyone else) that the unit was actually halfway decent and it was just the "garbage time" yards and points that brought their stats down. You know... the same thing the Falcons fans are currently doing.

I'm still mad about the intentional grounding / safety in the Super Bowl. Don't see many intentional groundings that are thrown 30 yards to the center of the field.

who is this Felger?

If he had gone low with it that would have helped with a collision too.. tougher to destroy someone when they are catching it low to the ground.

2011 team significantly better than the 2001 team.

Based on what?
