How would you have reacted in 2009 if you were told that that you'd be able to draft both Taylor Mays AND Brandon Spikes in 2010?

LOL. Good point. It's amazing how much can change in a season.

A couple years ago we were dissapointed that Rey M. didnt come out and we ended up with Mayo instead. Last year he dropped into the 2nd round and look at the improvement in Cincy's defense! They went undefeated in their division with both Pit & Baltimore! I'd say we could do worse than these 2 guys, but we can do better.

to be fair i think rey would have dropped either way, nature of the ILB position in the draft

Being that way, do you think Mayo was a reach at #10?

Which is why when people say "I don't want a RB this year, I want so and so next year" I shake my head.

Spikes will be a Patriot next weekend

The improvement wasn't because of Rey Beer-luga.

This is what I think and at a good value in the third. I think the kid has some serious skills at SILB for us I think and even if he plays 1st and 2nd down for little money. Everyone has seen the tape on this kid he has skills and will be a player in the NFL.

Does anyone really feel that Ted Johnson ran sub 5 for 3/4 of his career?? For our SILB we need a thumper like this kid....not in the first two rounds though but in the third I would take a shot on the guy.

I think his 40 time is going to really hurt his draft status.

He is more versatile than people think, he played as a DE on the edge during passing downs. He could basically play all of the Pats LB positions but would be great match with Mayo for first and second downs.

If somehow they get a early third round pick he would great value.

He is also a winner and brings some bravado to the defense.

That is what I am hoping but when I watch his film I though he played faster then Malaluga last year. If he is sitting there at 119 I would grab him and many mocks have him in the 4th or 5th.

Another kid who is falling at LB is Eric Norwood and if we missed out on a pass rush in the first two rounds Norwood is going in the third and fourth in some mocks.

I do not think Spikes gets drafted. (ie: Kai Parham from a few years ago)

As for Mays, I think it proves how good Cushings, Mathews, Malauaga and the other USC defenders were that they could make Mays look good back there.

It also proves that the more pressure on the QB the better the DB's look. Hint Hint to BB!!!!!

The bravado you speak of is, IMO, the single biggest thing lacking in this defense.

Count me in as being all about seeing Spikes in a Pats uniform.

Are those the same Cushing, Matthews and Maualuga that were not worthy nfl starters a year ago?

A team could do worse than drafting those two. Mays is coachable and could possibly play linebacker. Spikes has game production.

NFL starters =/= Patriots starters...

Yes, he was a reach. The Pats had to take him at #10 because "supposedly" the Lions were going to take him at #17. As much as I wanted the Pats to improve their LB's, there wasn't anybody worthy of taking at the #10 spot. But I will admit, I wanted the Pats to take Vernon Gholston if he slid to #7 with Clady in a close 2nd.

So that would be an indictment of Everson Griffen as well.
