Re: Re: 2 yards

I wasn't comparing Amendola to Wilfork, Mayo, or Vollmer, I was pointing out how ridiculous it is to be disappointed in a player for being injured.

So you were not disappointed by Ras-I Dowling career with us?

Numbers in a vacuum are close to useless... That said, NFL is a game of inches so 2 yards/play is huge

I think the consensus amongst most is that of all the issues we've had on offense the slot wide receiver had been the smallest despite the loss of Welker. Edelman has been outstanding giving us contributions almost nobody would have expected, Amendola had one good game in week 1 and since has either been injured or subpar; the 2 of them have combined for 67 receptions, 636 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. That's some good production out of the slot position, and we certainly wouldn't be 6-2 without it.

The question I have is are we coming about 2 yards short of replacing Welker?

Welker averaged 12.9 yards per catch in 2011 and 11.5 yards per catch in 2012, this season Edelman is averaging 9.6 yards per catch and Amendola is averaging 9.2 yards per catch.

With all the issues on 3rd down this season how much do you think this 2-3 yards per catch difference is making?

Is the 2-3 yard difference actually caused by the someone other than Welker receiving the football or does it just happen to correlate?

I do not agree with the comparison at all.

Welker averaged 10.5 - 10.5 - 10.5 his first 3 years here then 11.0 and 9.9 it was only after we got Gronk and Hernandez - one year later - that his numbers went higher. Amendola should be compared to the first years ... not the latter and he really has not had a chance to play regular/healthy yet.

I don’t know Icy; a part of me gets what you’re saying and then another part of me thinks offense has evolved in terms of the use of the slot and Welker evolved as a player. I don’t know that I attribute it to Gronkowski or Hernandez arriving, I mean how many games did Welker play with both of them last season week 1 in which he was barely used. Over the years I think Welker became smarter and understood ways to add 1, 2 or 3 yards on catches that he would not have picked up in the past.

Nope, I think it's a shame he could never get healthy but I don't blame players for being injured. If Amendola came in here and was in on 80%+ of the offensive plays and wasn't getting it done then i would be disappointed in his production, but blaming him for tearing up his groin or getting his head taken off is ridiculous imo. those are the risks a player takes and i am impressed that Amendola was able to get himself back on the field in both instances.

Amendola averages 12.9 per catch. Does that change this thread?

OK that's fair, I can agree with that logic on most levels.

Personally I am disappointed in Ras-I's career here, but not in him. I'm disappointed that he never lived up to his potential through no fault of his own.

That's how i see it, i wish he had turned into a really good corner for them but I'm not blaming him for being injured.
