It seems pretty clear that there are going to be a lot of TE reps for the Pats, especially early in the season. The 53 currently has 4 TEs and 5 WRs, with 3 of those WRs being Slater, a UDFA rookie, and a guy widely thought of as having been on the roster bubble. They also have various OTs who have lined up as TEs in the past, including one who scored a 16-yard TD last January.
I presume that a common offensive set will feature Gronk, Chandler, Edelman and another WR. Indeed, it's likely to be the most common set until LaFell is back, and potentially afterward as well.
As to who the other WR is -- Dobson is the more natural guy for the role, but Amendola has accomplished more on the Pats. So I offer no opinion on that part.
And by the way -- in a jumbo package, it's conceivable that 4 TEs could play at once, or more likely 3 each TEs and OTs. The Patriots' short-yardage situation is anyway weird, in that they excel at QB sneaks and short passes, but make me nervous on conventional running plays.
