Nickel City. Man, that is a claim to fame.
Let's see, there is "The Erie Canal" song I learned as a child for some reason... "From Albany to Buffalo... low...Low bridge, everybody down, low bridge for we're comin' to a town/and you'll always know your neighbor/you'll always know your pal/if you ever navigated on/The eerie Canal"
So there's that. It's the one-end-of-a-canal city.
Nickel City, never thought about that, buffalo nickels. Now I get it. That's got to fill you with pride.
Look at the East Coast, whether NFC or AFC...
- New York, representing the cultural and financial capital, represented by Giants, which could mean something about giants of industry or something... I mean they could slap giant building graphics on their jerseys or something... beats the hell out of "looks sort of like a buffalo nickel if you take the buffalo off it."
Of course their other team seems to be named for a gang in a Broadway show, but still something people could SORT of connect with, representing the place of Broadway in NY culture.
- Philadelphia. You could point to Revolutionary War stuff (pretty common on the East Coast, but they do have stuff like the Declaration of Independence and Ben Franklin with a key and a kite (you see it right?) I'm assuming the eagle is federal eagle but I'm off to look that up... WOW! Turns out it was primarily commissioned as derivative from the eagle of FDR's Works Progress Administration, secondarily a federal eagle.
- New England - of course you get the Patriot logo - Lex and Con, or in Spanish, Lex y Con, from which we of course get the word lexicon. But I digress. Minutemen. Boston Tea Party. Tar, feathers, the whole nine. No mystery.
- The Ravens - technically in the NFCN, but on the Coast. Great reference - the only NFL team named after an alcoholic poet. I can't believe they never generated Poe Pound full of guys smoking pipes with patches on the elbows of their sports jackets, who yell "NEVERMORE" if the other team scores. Well anyway. A mean bird is better than a missing buffalo, leaving just the nickel.
Hey there's a thought. Maybe Buffalo's saying their claim to fame is that their logo animal was almost hunted to extinction.
- The Dolphins. Okay, I know, I know. But being the seaworld team is still marginally better than whatever TF Buffalo's saying it is or pretending it isn't or whatever.
- Washington technically Commanders. Okay that works with the Pentagon being nearby, or the Handmaid's Tale coming true. I'm not doing the last name.
I think Dallas is still somehow NFC East right? Okay that's just effed up.
My point here is, it's not hard to find something significant to hang your "hat" on in this neighborhood. Being forced to identify with a pun about a trick-shooting wild west showman, I mean...
