The odds of surviving a gunshot wound are approximately 80%, so the numbers are on his side, and the fact that he’s “out of danger” isn’t necessarily an indicator that a smaller caliber weapon was used.

If it’s a headshot, that’s a much different story, and the survival drops to like, 10%.

Back shot often means that either the shooter was a young(er) kid who just doesn’t care (as opposed to a “veteran” criminal), or that it wasn’t necessarily intended but something went wrong during the scrap. Often times, we see the two overlap.

Just my educational background, that’s all. I’ve helped on some projects for sentencing reform, though.

Personally, I was rather surprised re: the gunshot wound stat when I first heard it years ago, and the same goes for overdose victims. The fact is that most of these people survive. Some of the numbers will differ a bit depending on study/source, but in general the high majority end up alright, and I’m not sure that most people know this.

Either way, it’s still very scary stuff. No doubting that. We’re obviously hoping that Big Papi ends up well and falls in line with the numbers.

I was thinking about taking a trip there as I had read some study that said that people in the DR were among the happiest in the world.

It doesn't mean that crime is non-existent but this doesn't seem random at all. Either someone had a beef or someone was trying to prove themselves for some sort of initiation or something. Or mental illness, though I'm of the opinion that if you try to harm someone else you're mentally-ill in someway regardless.

He’s been a bit pudgy for awhile, now. I’m guessing that you didn’t see much of the recent World Series, since he was part of the before/after crew that would break things down. Of course, you know what they say about the camera adding weight, too.
