What first-time coaches can learn from Belichick

Pretty great summary of what makes his coaching/management approach so successful. I could read about BB for weeks without getting bored.

Personally, I will never understand the approach of most other franchises when it comes to the big picture. I think if you are a team where the GM has ultimate say on a roster that person should also be the one that gives out the general philosophy and then hires, drafts and shops in FA based around that. But the way many teams are hiring/firing coaches that have almost completely opposite offensive/defensive philosophies is mindboggling. I can't even count anymore how often teams like the Browns or the Bills have switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3 making some of the recently drafted players suddenly suboptimal fits.

I understand that it's easier to get rid of a coach than a bunch of players when things are not going well but if you hire someone that is going to install something completely different which makes a couple of your recently acquired/drafted players a non-fit then whats the point ?

The way the Patriots are built with internal continuity is the most obvious solution to the entire drafting/FA/scheme-ing issue. It boggles my mind why so many other owners rather have a wild west situation.

Depends what he reads..

What do you know! The blind squirrel came though.

The real question is: could you have BB read to you for weeks without falling asleep?

Thats a great idea.

He should do that as a charity fundraiser for Make a Wish, Dana Farber or Children's Hospital.

BB picks out a bunch of children's books and he reads them to the kids.

Knowing BB whatever they raise he'll match it.

Great cause and we know the kids will fall asleep. Parents too.

Actually QM, I thought this was a pretty pedestrian and shallow effort by Bedard. It was OK in the sense that anything about BB and complimentary about the Pats is "OK". But he missed a lot of key points, that I'd point out, but there might be a book in it someday. He also didn't emphasize enough the importance of the role semantics plays in the Pats success.

So it was a decent article, but really could have been so much more.

I think it was meant to be concise and as such it works pretty well.

Obviously, you could fill multiple longform articles with what BB has done in New England. However, if you keep the relative attention span of the average reader in mind I think that it was effective in summarizing some of the key aspects that other coaches/franchises should think about.
