OT:Officials make embarrassing call in Browns-Redskins game

Thanks for posting that. The timeline, as short as it is, really shows how counter to reality the NFL's explanation is. Johnson fumbles the ball, recovers it, and is standing up within 2 seconds of the pile forming. That's not enough time for someone on the Redskins to recover the ball, be contacted by a Browns player (thus being ruled down), and then have the ball pulled away from him

Wasn't it last year against the Colts that they tried an onside kick, a Patriots player initially had the ball, but Indy ended up with it? The officials ruled that the Patriots player had the ball and was down, so it didn't matter that it was eventually pulled away from him. It's impossible for that sequence to have played out with Cleveland and Washington.

Blandino admits “bad visual” but maintains right call made on Duke Johnson fumble

Though Blandino admitted that there’s “no question it’s a bad visual” to see Johnson holding the ball while officials pointed in the Redskins’ direction, he said he didn’t believe the call came too quickly.

“It’s quick but we want our officials if they have clear evidence we want to rule immediately,” Blandino said. “We don’t want an extended scrum. It’s a player safety issue.

here's the clip if you don't want to click on nfl.com:

Ref clearly signals after the player holds up the ball. Ridiculous.

Playing devil's advocate here but is there another angle ?

If one of them had a clear view of initial Redskins recovery + being down before the ball came loose again it would at least explain why it was ruled that quickly.

But then again given the general issues we see week to week with how refs are interpreting the rulebook occam's razor might just indicate incompetency.

there isn't one that shows a clear recovery by anyone. that's why they couldn't overrule the original call on the field, which was a recovery by the redskins.

Based on what I saw in Foxboro yesterday, Pete Morelli is giving Jeff a run for his money.
You're both forgetting Jerome Boger.

That Pats/Colts onside kick came to my mind as well. I'm still not sure how that was ruled in favor of the Patriots.

Just goes to show sometimes it goes your way.....soemtimes it doesn't.

Of course, this was the same game with the worst fake punt in NFL history, so naturally this was not even footnote after the game.
