I disagree.

Comparing an actual dead money figure to a hypothetical $0 dead money figure next year is indeed misleading.

But it would be better to compare it to an estimate for next year than to imply it is close to meaningless. A little less good, but easier, would be to do what the article indeed fleetingly does -- compare it to a league-wide norm.

Further, contrary to what the article suggested, the historical source of dead money is not terribly important. It is what it is.
