1/1/23 Dolphins @ Patriots pregame thread

There is some truth to this analysis, but QBs throw the long ball in this situation all the time. Thornton is running at full speed and it appears as though Lazar feels the single high safety is going to turn and catch up to Thornton. Not a chance in the world. The single high safety is going to turn, accelerate, and catch a guy that is faster than him? Mac can stare down Myers and then release the ball leading Thornton before the pass rush gets to him. Thornton is not "wide open" but this is the NFL. Duke the safety by staring at Myers and then release the ball to Thornton - commonly successfully done in the NFL. Worse case the ball is incomplete and the safety is worried about the deep ball for the rest of the game. Starting to throw deep balls in Q4 when you are playing catchup does not surprise anyone.

Good morning everyone, getting ya'll ready for a Thursday:

Is something called a "Tae Hayes" really the best that Billy & Al Groh's kid could find, even at this short notice?

Right now we need CBs who've taken actual NFL snaps, not developmental projects.

Could Mackenzie Alexander not be pried-away from Dallas' PS? What about street vets like Kevin King, Ross ****rell, Nevin Lawson, or even old friend Darryl Roberts?

If Teddy Ballgame doesn't find a way to screw it up, this could get ugly...

Key player already with a bright future. Wonder if he’s the second best CB in the 2022 draft after Sauce?

Really sucks that Little Nicky Caesar's team decided to go with Derek Stingley instead of Gardner... Maybe he would've somehow helped the Texans hang-on for the win vs the Queefs...

I think Brian (whoever he is) is right and Lazar is wrong in the above analysis. You can see the safety start to jump the cut and Mac holds the ball for another beat or half second. At that point, Mac still has the capability of going to Thornton who has beaten his coverage

Yep, Bates never really even looks at Thornton, he's focused on the QB & Meyers the whole time because he doesn't respect the Pats's deep attack... Nor should he.

Amazing how Caserio seems to miss on draft picks over and over. Seems like the law averages would kick in and half or a quarter of his picks would be good, but no. Glad he is gone for here.

Jack Jones might be back. The Pats might be holding him out to be cautious and might let him start practicing today or tomorrow. Otherwise this game will be very interesting.

Idk but Sauce can play. Good pick by Douglas.

Indeed... Some people dismissed losing Malcolm Butler & SloJuan Williams to injury during the preseason and Terrance Mitchell to the Titties early in the season as no big deal, and certainly there were players ahead of them on the depth chart at that time; but when it's Christmas Week and you haven't yet been eliminated but you're missing some of your top CBs, a couple of whom for awhile now, that's when experience matters... We could use a healthy Malcolm now, Mitchell too before he was IRed last week...

probably hard to get anyone to come in a short week and learn the system ? no team really can handle this level of injuries to one position and its depth

I was a big fan of Wade would love to see him make plays.
Not having Mills has been a real problem for us.
I want him back I’m not sure what he can command on the open market I’m not comfortable with him being more than 10 mill on the cap.

Jonathan Jones Is an interesting one on one hand he can cash out but he’s played some not great ball the last 6 weeks.
He may be back for less than I thought.
However Raiders, Titans, Texans, and wherever Mayo goes is a threat to steal the kid.
Would be good to see Wade and their PS dbs show something.
The Miami receivers are tops in the league and Teddy B is no pushover.
Unless our O can score 4 plus TDs our playoffs live and die with this secondary.

The pats score 21.2 PPG. That is with 6 defensive/ST TDs right?

Jones, Bryant & Wade will be covering Tyreek & Waddle. Bridgewater is a high end back up QB.

I don’t get the pats -2.5 spread currently. Offense is going to have to score.

CB is in scary shape right now.
Even Phillips is hurt now. And DMac is not the cover safety he used to be!
We're going to just pray that these new PS guys can suddenly run 4.3.
It really just puts all the pressure on Judon, Uche & Co. to consistently give Bridgewater less than 2sec in the pocket.

I agree but at the very least he should've released the ball earlier to Meyers who was open for a completion.

Here's a better look from the EZ, you can see Thornton is already open when Mac throws. If he releases the ball 1 sec earlier with one of his floaters, given the distance, he hits a wide open Thornton. But again, should've completed to Meyers.

Wow, Marcus Jones got a concussion when the Bengal jumped on his back after the Chase fumble.

Jon Jones, Myles Bryant and Shaun Wade vs. Tyreek Hill and Waddle?

We need Mills and Jack jones back really fast.
Do you have video of that?
