Good deal, let's have more football news like this.

Negotiated his own contract without an agent?! Unheard of!

I must say I was a little surprised at the value of the contract. But I now recall there is a vet minimum do you know what it is?

It's right on the Vet min.
From Miguel's http://patscap.com
NFL Minimum Salary Levels for the 2006 season

Rookie - $235,000
1 Credited Season - $310,000
2 Credited Seasons - $385,000
3 Credited Seasons - $460,000
4 to 6 Credited Seasons - $545,000 *
7 to 9 Credited Seasons - $670,000 *
10+ Credited Seasons - $770,000 *
*All salaries for players with four or more years of experience AND who sign contracts that qualify for veteran's exemption will only count $460,000 against teams' salary caps.

Thanks. That makes sense now. I was figuring 770,000 for a ST guy was a little steep.

This is good news. Hopefully Troy will be next. I'd hate for Troy to leave NE with the muffed punt as his last play.

Isn't it still?

But he remains an emergency safety ... and honorary assistant strength coach ... so, maybe ..

WOOO-HOOOO!!! Best move of the offseason so far.

He still has to make the team next year. This really isn't that news-worthy.

Come on... between wild speculation about who BB might be dating, debating Brady's fashion choices, and Stealer fans crowing, THIS is news-worthy.

Hell, at least it has to do with Patriots Football.

Good point. It's a logjam at MLB, but desolate behind Vrabs and Big Mac at OLB.

MLB:

Bruschi
Vrabel
Beisel
Brown?
Claridge

STers:

Izzo
Davis
Alexander

OLB:

McGinest
Colvin
Banta-Cain (STer too)
Brown?

Obviously Brown was a top-tier pass-rushing OLB in his days with Seattle, but he hasn't shown that ability just yet.

I hear that Colvin kid does okay in a pinch at OLB.
Brown will do alright if needed and both Claridge and Beisel have experience outside.

It will be crowded as long as you list Izzo and Davis as MLB's instead of Ster's, their real position. And, BTW, Chad Brown will probably play more outside than inside.

Not to bad considering only a little more then half of his salary counts towards the Cap. I think just over 400k for a solid ST and a good chemistry guy in the locker room as well as an emergency safety isn't to bad.

It only really count againts the cap if he make the team anyway. They will have about 90 guys at TC trying to make the team so he should be one of them.

Very rare, indeed, but not unheard of.

I think our own beloved Teddy B used to his own deals, up until this very last renegotiation.

As i recall the sequence ... Tedy negotiated his own contract, again ... but then hired an agent in the wake of his stroke. Presumably in self-defense against the sudden complexity of his situation.

Hmmmm... Teddy B... the name's familiar, but I can't seem to place it.

And I thought even this last renegotiation was done himself without an agent, the only time he brought in an agent was after the stroke, reportedly to handle media and whatnot, but not to negotiate any contracts.

Edit: duh... should have kept on reading:

Yeah, what he said first.

...in fact, if DDavis does make the 53, then the future of the LB corps is slightly bleaker than right now, because everyone, esp. Bru and McG, will be one year older.
As I have stated before, amoung other needs (RB, ROT, SS, NT, CB/FS), the Pats need to bring in LBs who may have to eventually start at ILB and OLB.
Probable locks: McGinest, Bruschi, Vrabel, Colvin, Beisel, Claridge.
That leaves, if it were up to me (and I know it's not), a max of 3 spots available. I would like 1 spot saved for a DE/OLB Elephant to groom behind Willie, and another for a run-stuffing ILB. The 3rd spot can be either in or out, depending on where Vrabel and Claridge go.
IMO, the future of the LB corps does NOT include Izzo, Davis, CBrown, Chatham, TBC or Klecko. The former are past their prime, the latter will have no prime. Sorry.
