Equivalent to BB on O, hmmmm….
How many Reid Off game plans does he have enshrined in the PF HoF?
- Ok, 2-0 for BB.
How many rule changes were implemented league wide just to stop his game planning?
- ok, 3-0 for BB
How many innovations (like joint practices etc) came from him?
- like 20-0 for BB
Please tell me any one play design that Reid INNOVATED?
Again, I’m not saying he isn’t good. Nor that he isn’t respected. And maybe he is a real good game-planner, that identifies the 11th weakest link in your D really well week to week. But that doesn’t make him an offensive genius.
I just don’t get the “greatest offensive mind” pitch you are trying to sell me. Tell me more with specifics, paricularly to the innovation point; and maybe you can convince me. Or just give up and write me off as incorrigible.
I already provided the evidence when I showed how he created top ten offenses with four different QB’s. But if you need more…
Reid famously diverged from tradition in the late 2000s by integrating college spread concepts and read-option elements, particularly during his tenure with Michael Vick in Philadelphia and later with Mahomes.
Reid’s genius is perhaps most visible in his play design and "playbook discipline." He is known for introducing a dozen or more new plays every week that opponents have never seen.
A key aspect of his strategy is iterative deception: he may run a specific play out of a formation multiple times during the regular season, only to unveil a completely different, high-impact play from that same set in the playoffs.
Notable innovations include:
The "Corn Dog" Formation: A unique setup featuring three running backs in the backfield, designed to confuse defensive alignments.
Motion and Manipulation: Reid’s staff excels at using pre-snap motion to force defenses into revealing their coverage rules, then exploiting those tendencies instantly. A famous example occurred against the Titans in the 2019 AFC Championship, where motion caused a safety to cover the wrong receiver, leading to an easy touchdown.
Trick Plays: From jet sweeps to wheel routes for fullbacks, to inside handoffs to TE’s that can’t be described as either a pass or run play, Reid incorporates "gimmicky" plays that are actually highly calculated tactical strikes.
It’s an odd choice to deny what is commonly known by even casual football fans, and unassailable by football experts. But I admire your courage to speak in the absence of knowledge.
