More Myles Garrett Trade Smoke

FWIW. Unlikely, to me.

Including the AJ Brown trade, we wouldn't have a first rounder for the next half decade. Not good for thou and I.

His contract is really untradeable for a contending team who we assume already has other big contracts. Unless they are already on a good team, players like Garrett are stuck purgatory once they sign that massive deal.

I don’t think it’s too bad. The acquiring team is really just on the hook for any new option bonuses which are around $29M a year for the next few years, though the cap hit starts small and ramps up over time. So, his cap hit in 2026 is probably something like $10M or less. Definitely workable for a contending team that wants a player of his caliber.

The contract can probably be made to work. The acquisition cost + the contract is too rich for me.

I would give up 2 first for him, but I wouldn't go beyond that. He's as dominant a player as it gets, and the argument can be made that even two first round picks wouldn't produce his production and impact, but you can't gut the board completely for him.

a deal with the cap in mind could be structured around a 2027 1st, a 2028 2nd and Barmore.
not saying Browns would say yes, but the deal would work for the Pats.

Honestly, what we say on here in terms of the cost in trades and treasure is always off when the actual trade happens. That said, if the numbers are what folks are bandying around here, just no. After 2027 we'll have the Maye deal to build in over time, likely including use of his fifth, option year. The Pats' first dynasty worked on an "only pay Brady" model then an "only pay Brady and Seymour" model, then if I remember correctly, we got Corey Dillon cheap because he was such a cancer in Cincinnati. The rest of the roster was roleplayers with "next man up" capabilities across the board.

This time? We have Gonzo to deal with. We have high-value additions in the secondary to pay. We're going to have accelerated spend on head case X and Z receivers, now that Boutte's rookie deal is within a year of being up and therefore being treated as over, and we're adding at those positions (sorry - receivers don't get younger.)

Garrett can take over a game, obviously. We all remember when he took over one against us last year. But really, although having that presence in our front seven would be a league-wide show-stopper, given the secondary we have already, isn't the cost going to bite us? Isn't there a breaking point?

We tend to generate "let's make a run" wide-eyed idealism on the board. I don't know... seems like wanting a generational talent at several positions just feels way too good to be true. If we know guys can take over games, they know it too. Wouldn't everybody buy all these guys if they could? How come only we can afford it?

So if we can, we can, but I don't want to "make our run" right now, in a one- or two-year burst, miss the mark, and end up waiting five years until the next run.

Garrett's cap hit this season could be incredibly low ($7m), given the structure of his most recent deal
the Pats would need to clear space starting next season, so moving Onwenu doesn't help the situation.
they would need to move someone that has sizable cap hits in future seasons...Barmore, Milt Williams.

Did it? They got walloped for 31 by the Bears. Ravens hung a lot of points. Broncos even got 30+ on em.

you do realize Parsons tore his ACL and is out until most likely weeks 5 thru 8? even at that, I assume he is on a snap count for a few games...

Exactly

Parsons got hurt after GB paid out the nose. These types of examples were the reason why BB spread his risk out.

Agree with you 100% on the talent evaluation. Where I disagree is the situation. Trade for even Garrett only makes sense if it positions you to win a superbowl.

Well aware we just played in one, but given how the left side of the OL looked down the stretch and that Campbell, when last seen looked like trash there are too many questions on the OL for me to say we are Miles Garrett away from a championship

I mean, this is kind of silly
Campbell was very good pre injury. the team then went out and signed pro bowl caliber LG Vera-Tucker and moved Wilson to his better, more natural position, OC.

Campbell was good vs subpar defenses and DCs who could not figure out how to attack the NE offense. Furthermore, Maye is very mobile and fast. Many times the NE OL broke down, but Maye was able to convert into a positive play or at the very least no sack or loss of yardage. Win for the NE OL thanks to Maye.

The quality of opposing QBs also factors into the equation. If NE attained a significant lead the Pats offense would run the ball to burn time off the clock because the other offense struggled to score.

I get you can’t predict that. But this is exactly the risk involved with giving up that capital.
